Single favourite effect?

If you had to pick one - and only one - what would it be? I like a bit - or indeed a lot - of dirt, can spend ages cocking about with delay and absolutely love a bit of ambient reverb, but I think on balance I'd have to say tremolo. There's just something about it that changes otherwise mundane playing into something wonderful.

Funny you should say that, as tremolo is my least favourite of all !  My favourite has to be reverb - huge deep pools of endless reverb.  If you're excluding reverb as it's used everywhere, then it has to be a bit of subtle stereo chorus.
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

  • Chorus for me. The dod FX 65 is seriously one of my favourite sounding things.

Reverb, or if excluding that probably phasing.

Tremolo is the most fun, especially before dirt with a nice sustain but I would pick a huge reverb if just had to choose one. Good question Jamie.

Tough call between reverb and delay... but I think a really good delay has it. I spend hours with my moog.

I'd love to try a binson or space echo... one day...

My board has a tuner, boost, delay, another delay, tremolo and reverb on it so I guess delay wins.

I'll say for rock, whammy for octave up and down. For clean playing though reverb definitely

Reverb is my favourite effect with treble boosters coming in a close 2nd.

I'm not going to count distortion, because if it's not available as a pedal I'll use the amp for it. On that basis...delay, because it can elevate anything to shimmery goodness if set up right, and with subtle use it softens the edge of solos to take them from "nice" to "epic".

Leslie/rotary - I have to consciously choose to use other effects so I don't use it on everything

Once it would have been chorus, but now whenever I switch on a chorus pedal it just sounds like Come as You Are. So, reverb.

Not counting drive or amp reverb, delay.
