Speaking of knowing what you're doing, I often feel that - much as I love it - I don't really know what I'm doing with delay. I'm sure there are much better ways of using it than I do.

Germanium fuzz face. The clean has so much punch. The growl. The out of your head full on fuzz volume at 10.

Reverb is the most essential effect to avoid your guitar tone sounding flat unless you are playing in a large enough resonant area that provides sufficient natural ambience.  Delay would be a possible alternative but generally speaking, although delay has certain similarities with reverb, very few delay effects can adequately replicate what a good spring reverb can do.  After reverb, a decent distortion.

I wonder if delay would be my joint first with chorus. I love putting it in front of dirt for mega rich, thick rhythm sounds. 

But then I'm like, nah, chorus rocks.

If OD is allowed then that's definitely it. If not then delay makes everything nicererer or more good'er.
