McLaughlin and his rhythm playing at 44 minutes approx.

the direction of his picking hand is confusing me, it does not appear to be a straight forward up and down motion that I can follow...

some players play a down stroke (rhythm guitar) with the back of their hand rotating to the floor whilst for others the back of hand rotating to floor motion could produce an up stroke...imagine the clockwise motion of turning a round door knob, that motion can be either an upstroke or a down stroke for chord rhythms.......what's John mac up to here   ?

Seems to start with an upstroke and then 2 down before moving on to straight up down. TBH I think he is just going where the mood takes him and accenting what he feels like.
