Mixer problem

I did start a thread here about my Mackie Mixer problem but I can't seem to find it now

I did a gig recently and we put some interval tracks through the PA. We connected the mp3 player as usual but the vocals where out of phase sounding and echoing / flanging sounding. My original thread's comments mentioned it might be the cables and it's connections etc. I've set it all up again and it is doing the same with my cables this time connected to my iPhone. I noticed that it only happens when the White jack is plugged in with the red jack along side it (See pic links below). All is well if I pulled the white jack out except it will be summed to mono. What's happening ? Is it repairable ?

Does the cable sit in the phone correctly ? these cables are TRS but the phone socket is TRRS as it uses the last ring for the mic input ... it only needs to be a bit out to lose ground connection

Does the phone socket work correctly with other phones ... if not you need a new lighting port flex cable at around £6.20

To test the cable buzz it through with a metre, ground is common to both ends, tip is left, ring is right

Yep. It does the same through my laptop. Phone connector end is the same as a headphone connection TRRS

I'm starting to think it is a problem with that cd in port. Does anyone know of anyone near to bath/bristol who could have a look at it for me?

Awesome thanks @monkey42 . I've just spoken to someone who said it's a common problem when using those cd inputs etc. Best to get a cable made up with 2 x 1/4 inch line level jacks at one end and 3.5mm iPhone jack at the other end. I'll try that route first :)

    thanks again

What happens if you pull the red out - do you also get it working and in mono?

What you're describing sounds exactly like a failure of the common ground at the 3.5mm plug end. Those RCA jacks aren't switching (I don't think) so if the two channels are out of phase - caused by the ground being broken - either will work on its own but both will sound odd.

But it could probably be the common ground pin on that double RCA jack - I think they're done like that. If it's cracked at the PCB it would do the same thing. But check and double check *everything* before suspecting the mixer… they're quite a pain to take apart!

Thanks @ICBM . It wasn't only my cable but others. So I've just ordered an inexpensive cable to go into the line level 1/4 inch jacks to see if that's any different

Bit late now but. You can get RCA to 1/4" mono jack adaptors and they very reliable and about the only audio adaptor I will use. I go for the all metal version. Gold if I can get it. Makes buggerall diff' to the sound but I likes me Bling!

    Dave.

Thanks Dave. The cable I've ordered is only a few quid so that's still an option . I'll get back to you all with any updates. Hopefully successful ones :)
