Your favourite double humbucker, 5 way switch config?

Installed new double humbuckers in my HSH guitar (the middle single is a dummy now) but the silly people at the shop set it up like a 3 way switch. Going to take it back to rewire taking full advantage of the 5 way switch. What's your favourite setup?

  • My blacktop strat had
    1- full neck hb
2- outer neck single coil (kinda stratty)
    3- both hbs
4- inner coils of both HBs (kinda like position 2 on a tele)
    5- bridge hb

it was great- you could go from crunchy to cleanish just by going from position to position.

I prefer a 3 way switch, i don't find taps or splits that useful for what i do.

My PRS has been rewired to
    Full neck humbucker
Partial split neck & full bridge
    Full neck and bridge
Full neck and bridge partial out of phase that doesn't have the full bass cut of a true out of phase.
    Full bridge

I've a push pull that partially splits both humbuckers too for a reasonable approximation of single coils

Suhr use these switching combinations as well. I'm having a custom version of a Thinline Tele made for me, and I'm going for these 5 switching choices with a pair of Wide Range Humbuckers.

Neck coils in parallel on position 2 does awesome strat tones. Worth trying

    Neck humbucker
Inner coils (Strat-like, more like neck/middle than bridge/middle)
    Both humbuckers
    Outer coils (Tele-like)
    Bridge humbucker

If you use opposite polarity pickups both single-coil positions are hum-cancelling as well.

On a 2HB Strat I do quite like the single neck coil in the 2 position and the pair of single coils in 4 as well, but on a 'Super Tele' I would reverse it and use both front coils from each pickup in position 2 and the single bridge pickup (also front coil) in 4 - more Tele-like sounds.

    I like:

    Neck (series)
    Neck (parallel)
    Inner coils (series)
    Outer coils (parallel)
    Bridge (series)

'cos that gets you the two 'buckers on their own, a jangiler but not quacky single coilish sound, a middle 'bucker sort of sound and a slightly Tele-ish sound. And to me the order and positions are quite logical, particularly being able to knock the switch all the way forwards or all the way back for more "go".

I use a three way, for neck, both middle - but with one of the tone pots set for single/series/parallel (rotary switch), with a  master volume and tone.  Max flexibilty, easy to use, no unused hols on a strat plate.
