In Iron Maiden's case, I think it's 100% a part of the game. There should be one spot of gratuitous showing off.

Solos I hate - Clapton's crappy plinking noises in that awful "Lay Down Sally". What a waste of fretwire.

The worst "solo" I've ever heard is the one on Angels by Robbie Williams, I'm not a fan of his on any level in any case but I just wonder why they bothered with that one.

Ok I'm no fan of the fat dancer but that solo is a memorable one. One you can hum to yourself.

The best type of solo in my book. Most importantly it fits the song.

Audioslave- Doesn't remind me. 
A nice song ruined by a mawkish discordant solo that sounds like it's transplanted in from a totally different track.
