    Layla outro [/thread]

We have a winner. Awful out of tune nonsense. They played it on Radio 2 this week after Pop Master. I fucked off to the crapper until it was safe to return to work.

At 1:29 in the OP Vid, you can see Nicko start chucking sticks at Dave :)
I love Iron Maiden and Dave Murray, but I couldn't make it to 1:29.

seems utterly pointless and devoid of any real musicality.

Wow, you come across as a really negative dude.
I thought happy-clappy's were supposed to be annoyingly positive?

The worst solo I've ever heard is by Paul Weller on Start by The Jam.

    What a fucking din.

Yeah, it was horrid. I love Maiden myself and there's no doubt both Dave and Adrian are superb players. Never realised he did solos in the shows, I've seen them 3 times and seen some live vids etc. They probably saw fit to drop it ;)

Interesting to hear people's opinions, but I think that solo just nails the song completely.

Any kind of big unaccompanied solo like that is just awful and cringeworthy.
I agree, even back in the '80s, when I was a starstruck teenager and every rock/metal band had a drum solo and an unaccompanied guitar solo as part of the show, I always thought it was pointless.

To me rock guitar only works in a band context, unless you're one of those clever people who can create your own simultaneous bassline, or use a looper pedal to layer rhythmic parts to play over.

None of which is meant as a criticism of Dave Murray, I love the guy.  I often wonder if those '80s guitarists really wanted to do those solo spots, or if it was just the done thing.

The 90s version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cindi Lauper. It's responsible for the Floyd Rose's decline in music.

Wash your mouth out. I find the solo in Start! to be quite refreshing and fits the song perfectly.

Well there's three up there that I rate as great memorable solos that fit the song.

Girl Like You I consider to be one of the best pop songs written in my lifetime...I couldn't imagine the solo being bettered.

Beastie Boys is a classic. The guitar solo on something like No Sleep Till Brooklyn is probably technically better but FFYR works better for me.

As Weller heavily references/ plagiarised Tax Man with Start  - @proggy do you think the solo in the Beatles song is bad? I think that Start improves on the idea...

Probably John Mayers solo on the Fall Out Boy cover of Michael Jacksons Beat It.

I like the cover, but just wanna hear Van Halens solo come in, rather than Mayers somewhat but not sound a like..

I wouldn't say the Beatles solo was  good, but I prefer it to The Jam's effort.......just.

I don't really like either of those  songs to be honest.

Kirk Hammett on Wherever I May Roam. 4:10 onwards.

Horrible note choice, horrible tone, horrible vibrato, too much fucking wah as per usual. And it goes on for about eight years.

    Worse than leprosy.
