I'm thinking about buying a Jazzmaster, and I'm a blank canvas as far as this type of guitar is concerned.

What pearls of wisdom / sage advice do you have for me in this venture - make / model / colour / year / recommended / avoid / etc, etc.
Am willing to look at all options.

J Mascis in Purple Sparkle, because it's the best colour.

You're spoilt for choice these days for Jazzmasters. What's your budget, and do you prefer vintage or modern hardware and specification. For sheer playability the American Pro JM would take some beating, but it's not cheap and you might prefer a more vintage sound/feel.

Open budget, though my playing level might not be able to do the high end guitars justice. However I currently have from a 1995 fifty quid chinese Squier Strat to a PRS Custom 24 Artist.

    That's quite a contrast...

Natural flame maple top on (African) mahogany back, maple neck, both finished in tru oil. At the Creamery extra width jazzmaster pickups, straightforward volume, tone, 3-way switch.

Edit: should add, locking jazzmaster trem and mustang bridge. Not sure if this pic link will work, but here's to trying:

If I were looking for a JM (I'm not, I've got an AVRI Jazzmaster) these days I'd check out the Classic 60s. It's made in Mexico so it's 'only' £900 but it has a nitro lacquer finish and AVRI pickups.

Clearly I'm going to have to get this listed before I get myself in trouble for hijacking @MtB  thread! :)

I agree - I think this is the sweet spot for Fenders at the moment. The Lacquer Classic 60s (I have a Jag) seem to be a step up from the normal Classic Series in terms of feel. The AVRI pickups and quality case also add up to a lot. If you can find a used one for about £650 I reckon it would beat the spots off an overpriced MIJ.

    I'd +1 the Mexico option.

Frankly the quality of the Mex stuff is off the scale right now. I'm not a fan of the AVRI pickups though - they're ok but there are much better sounding (to my ears) available. But hey if we all
    liked the same...

    *cough* MJT....

But only if you know exactly what spec you want. If this is just a dabble into JMs to see how (or even if!) you like them, then the MIM lacquer ones are great.

  • +1 for the MIM Lacquer model. A good friend has one and it plays superbly, although he has swapped out the bridge for a staytrem. The pickups are brilliant. I liked it so much it made me go out and buy the 60s strat from the same series.

Make sure you are comfortable with the vintage radius and frets though, it took me a while to get into.
