How would you describe JA music...metal,hard rock?

What pedal into a clean amp for that OTT rock roar?

    Alt rock or alt metal.

Pretty much any high gain pedal will do it- it is more about how you play the parts.
So Suhr Riot, Bogner Red, Friedman BE OD.
You could probably do it with a Rat too.

Dave used JCM800's with Boss pedals and then JCM900's with Boss pedals.
    It isn't a complex rig.

Then get your vocalist to put so much reverb on his voice that it is literally inaudible (this is in any case my experience of JA live...)

Yup, ds2 or ds1 (can't remember which) I think for the gainier stuff.

    Great band.

Awesome band and a huge personal hero of mine, one of the 3 guys that made me get a PRS.

Clean Marshall 800 with a DS-1 or DF-2 I think will get you there, If I recall he moved to the 900's when he joined the Chills when they then subsequently recorded their last album worth listening to.

Best live band I've ever seen.  Ritual De Lo Habitual tour was incredible.

Weren't they considered the first alternative rock band? Definitely alt rock not metal though. Great band.

  • Jane's Addiction were superb. Didn't think much of Perry Farrell's other band, Porno For Pyros (though they did used to have a topless ballerina onstage) but Jane's Addiction wailed.

Apparently  great back then but I saw a reunion gig about 12 years ago and it was a big let down.

I saw Jane's Addiction supporting Nine Inch Nails. Disappointingly, JA were utter, utter dogshit. Perry Farrell was so off his face that he could barely stand up let alone sing, walked off stage at one point and refused to return, leaving Dave Navarro (whose ongoing embarrassment was clearly visible even from the upper tier) to make a cringeworthy appeal to the crowd to chant Perry's name to encourage him to return to finish the set.

    Sadly had a similar experience of seeing them live. Loved them on record but live was terrible. So much reverb on Perry's vocals that they were inaudible (although from what you could hear that wasn't a bad thing...). Left after about 20 mins. Think I saw the same reunion gig as @Reverend ;

I saw the RDLH tour in Newcastle and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

I'm sure the pinch of 'shrooms I'd had before going in had no influence on my appreciation  :)
