If you have facebook...

Brock has just put a link up to his MASSIVE IR collection on the original Helix FB page.

It is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7MJkH3xeFGsWWNxU1RGN25kZUU/view?usp=sharing

I HAVE NOT USED IT YET. I HAVE NOT VIRUS CHECKED IT. IF YOU DOWNLOAD THE FILES IT IS AT YOUR RISK.

Are they helix only or will they work with other IR hosting things?

I have no idea what IRs are or how they make my life better (and it might be a rabbit hole I don't want to get into) but I'll download them anyway :)

And who the fuck is Brock? Isn't he the guy from Pokemon?

  • He's the dude with the... I don't even know what he suffers (or not) from but he frets over the top of the guitar and has a nice legato technique

The look like they will work on most things. There is 1.5GB of them
There goes any creativity for a while... ;)

  • 1.5gb is a lot of IRs, has he shot all these himself?

I'm not on the group, plus I'm on a phone so can't look at the file either.

Yes. Once he'd caught them all he started on IRs, apparently.

I can confirm there are no malicious files within this folder.

Although there are so fucking many I have no idea where to start

Anyone else find IR's clunky. It reminded me of loading horrice goes skiing on my old spectrum. When I've used them briefly, auditioning them is about as much fun as pulling your teeth out. Wouldn't it be nice to have one IR for a cab and then be able to vary the mic position or mic type with a couple of knobs.

It may well be much slicker on Helix, but it's still one file / one sound I assume.

The inbuilt cabs in the Helix do exactly that
one of my favourite features on the Helix is you can change cabs /mics/distance or IRS with your feet in Pedal edit mode
which means you can play and audition cabs
IRs are fun for a play but I do prefer the convenience of the inbuilt cabs

Nope. Though it helps massively if the naming system is well organised.

  • You only need one IR: the right one

I found this, but actually once I found two or three I really liked, I was done.

God's cab was pretty good for heavy, tight metal (although I'm sure there are better out there), I found a greenback 4x12 for rock and dirty cleans and I think a different greenback 4x12 for cleans (or maybe the same cab but different mics?).

In any case, once I found a few I was pretty happy with I just stopped looking and used them.

it's only a rabbit hole if you choose to leave a really good sound in search of one that's different (not better). How many times have people insisted on how this drive is "a keeper" then six months down the line they buy a new one, or an old one they once had?

Except with IRs it makes a pretty remarkable difference (as opposed to being a subtly different tubescreamer).

I've gone back to using the built in cabs in the Helix, with a bit of setting up they really do sound every bit as good as a good IR
