    Top tip.

I'll keep it in mind next time I'm thinking of dropping some bricks.

The greatest thing about this piece of advice is it's versatility.  I know it refers specifically to the toe but I would imagine it could be applied to pretty much any bodily part.  Top tip.

  • Where I work I have to wear safety boots and everytime I drop something on my foot it is always on the side just before the bloody toe cap starts!

Steelies are great until you drop something really heavy on your foot at which point you end up with a severed toe rather than a broken one.

how heavy would something have to be to split a steel toe cap?

  • Not particularly heavy, 200 Jules projection is not actually much.

It would crush before split I would have thought.

heh, sorry was being silly. re steel toe caps, I've dropped a lump of wood about a foot in diameter and 4 foot long from about 3 foot onto one and not had any issue. Dropped a motorised pallet truck from about an inch as well, and they haven't had a problem.  I think my point was that you are unlikely to be able to carry anything heavy enough to split one, the point of them isn't to take the place of good practise etc but to prevent injury from accidents, like knocking a heavy spanner from a work bench or a brick you're carrying.

The issue comes if you drop something insanely heavy like a pallet of bricks or a truck engine on your foot. Without steelies it will smash your foot, but the bones will heal. With steelies on it will cut the end of your foot off and be almost impossible to get your foot out of the boot without doing more damage.

hmmm, good practise says you would not have your foot under something that heavy. Something that heavy drops on your foot it will squash it flat, steel toe cap or not. As I said, I had a motorised pallet truck fall on my foot, but as we used good practice it was only an inch or so from the ground. The toe cap took the weight, without it I'd have lost toes.

EDIT: I would argue that the position you are putting forwards is unprovable in that there's no way to compare damage caused by wearing toe caps as opposed to not.

I heard the bricks severed story from a chap who did H&S on a building site I worked on for a bit and the truck story from a bloke I was in a band with (no severed toe, but couldn't get the boot off without skinning his foot.)

It's definitely better to wear them than not and most places won't let you on a site without them anyway. I have steel soles in my work boots as well, but that does make them insanely heavy.

I recall hearing the same story about caps shearing off toes when I was a young engineer. At the time I didn't question it, but logically it makes no sense.

yeah, when I was at ashridge I had to lead walks I would take mine off and put on walking boots, still hate wearing them if I'm walking any distance.

EDIT and for real discomfort try wearing chainsaw boots.

  • I used to buy boots with composite toe caps instead of steel, they were lighter but offered the same protection.
