    the latter. A mids-heavy gain pedal (Bearfoot SYOD3 is the best I've used for this) gets you in the ballpark. Got my Deluxe Reverb very close to my J20. Getting the J20 to sound like a Deluxe or Princeton would be struggle

    I've not tried, but I would imagine that making a Blackface sound like a tweed is easier, since adding mids is easier than taking them away.

    Exactly. Not just the mids - you can take away clarity, headroom, bottom end and dynamics far more easily than you can add them. You can make any amp dirtier and more compressed with a pedal, but you can't make it louder and cleaner with one.
