How to get the Big Country sound using modern FX?

What's Hot

I know Big Country used the MXR M-129 Pitch Transposer, rack mounted unit with drive, chorus and delay to get their sound.

I've got the drive, delay and chorus covered.

Does anyone have an idea of a modern pedal equivalent for the M-129?

Thanks

Tony

EHX Hog probably comes the closest in pedal form.

Stuart used a Mesa Boogie Triaxis and Boogie power amp for much of his career.  Unmistakable really.

Boss pitch shifter of some description.

For what it's worth I know where Stuart Adamson's old HH combo is… it really does sound surprisingly like early Big Country, even with none of the other effects.

Half an answer this but Bruce Watson gets all his effects these days from a TC Nova System, which does include a pitch shifter. How he sets it I've no idea but that's your starter for ten... :kissing_wink:

    This, absolutely this.
I've been to hundreds of gigs over the years, including the likes of Prince, but I haven't enjoyed any of them as much as Big Country at Birmingham Hummingbird. RIP

I found a clip on YouTube of someone showing how to get that BC sound.

Wasn't right, just a shed load of chorus basically.

When I had a Boss PS-3 I stumbled upon a sound that immediately said 'Big Country' Can't recall the mode but it was uncannily accurate.

His guitar sound alone is a like a national emblem. I'm not ashamed to admit I get a bit homesick every time I hear it.

I played there in the early 90's. The guys running it managed a band & they tried to poach me & my singer. They were a little...intimidating as I recall. So we didn't sign up.
