Esquire Wiring

Does anyone know what the resistor does in an esquire circuit?

im working on an esquire partscaster and am
planning on using the Seymour Duncan wiring diagram.

theres a 3.3k resistor between a 0.05 capacitor and the switch.

seems simple enough, but my curiosity over the resistor demands taming.

what does the resistor actually do, and why the stated value of 3.3k?

Thanks

It sends the treble to ground by acting as a filter, as far as I can tell.
The value just decides how much goes to ground - the same way twisting a pot does.
3.3k will have been decided upon by trial and error until a desirable treble roll off was achieved.

The circuit pre-dates the invention of the electric bass guitar.

The capacitor and resistor network on selector switch position 3 is supposed to make an electric guitar with medium gauge strings sound kinda like a double bass.

There are more interesting things that could be done with one pickup and a three-way selector switch.
