It's a Tele with a Strat Mid and Neck Pickup.

Hmm nah that's not for me thanks, I don't want a Tele, plus they are numbers 2 and 3 in the "top three pickups on a strat" ranking list

I like the 51's, they have the most useful pickup layout. The aforementioned G & L fallouts look much sexier though but the necks feel a bit wider which I don't like.

Yeah I shall be looking at them as whilst it would still need a pickguard change they are a bit cheaper to start with

my 51 feels/plays nicer than my USA strat
far far better than MIM ones

I'll get a MiJ template done at some point. Jack's might hang on to it so others can benefit @thecolourbox ;

I think I'd get a scratch plate through WD Music. 

I think one through Jack's could be as much as £90 if you send it a template. WD would do a 3 ply for 40.

Can't you just get an HSS strat and forget about the 51 altogether?
A con you didn't mention for the 51 is that it's likely much harder to sell later than a strat.

Trouble is a MiJ '51 is less than £400 second hand. A MiM HSS with decent pups isn't going to be cheaper.

If you want something a bit stratty with some hipster cred, how about a jaguar/Jazzmaster or, if you can find one, a jaguarillo or cyclone?

(Jag has stratty pickups, JM has stratty neck and better pickups)
