So I win nothing (no surprise there).

So, to start things off, Cutaway or no cutaway? Is it just how it looks.

My 1st teacher had a custom made acoustic with a cutaway and he was convinced it did make a difference. However, I don't think it's a good or bad thing, just makes it sound different.

re aesthetics most cutaways look pretty good, except dreads, that look stupid with a cutaway.

If its small bodied and made by Taylor, a cutaway is fine. If its a dreadnought made by anyone, a cutaway is punishable by firing squad.

    I love a cutaway.
My first acoustic was a full dreadnought and I struggled with the high notes on it.
I've had two cutaways since and wouldn't go back.

I like the look of a cutaway although most seem to come with some sort of PU / electronics fitted, is it only people who plug in who need a cutaway?

It's probably because it's marketed as a "feature" nowadays, so if you spend more, you get electronics PLUS a cutaway.

Of course there are still some sensible electro acoustic dreads with no cutaway.

Nope. My Stonebridge cutaway is a pure acoustic.

I did however fit an LR Baggs soundhole pickup! ;)

Almost all do. I find this very annoying... I dislike most onboard electrics - I much prefer to add my own as necessary, as DiscoStu said.

I once enquired about getting a 'custom' Taylor - a cutaway model exactly the same as one they do as standard but without the electrics - but was quoted more than the price for the 'normal' electric model. I thought this was taking the piss - I know about production lines and all that stuff, but all they had to do was *not* fit £200-worth of electronics...

This could be good timing. I'm off to Mark Bailey's next week-end to start making an OM Acoustic. I'll start a Thread when I get home again on the build.

Cutaways are a matter of playing style really. Pretty essential for jazzers and people who like acoustic lead playing. Only my 12 string lacks one, and it is my least played guitar buy a mile. They do need a thin waist to look alright. And I doubt I'd choose a dreadnaught for up and down the neck stuff as they are too boomy
