Sometimes I don't bond with a guitar. My biggest let down last year was my PRS CE24. I'd always wanted one & found one in scarlet red, my favourite PRS colour.

A year later she'd been used at 2 band rehearsals & sat in a case for most of that time. With a wedding to pay for I moved her on. C'est La Vie.

Yeah ...and thats the other probem....selling a guitar to get something you want and not bonding with the new one and wanting the old one back ...

I have about 20 gtrs, most are 1950s and relatively obscure - i have sold 5 or 6 in the past few years (60s things) and concentrated on the ones/types i like best. There are a couple more heading out the door soon-ish, as they are similar to others that i like better - I'm building up to it slowly! Others i could sell easily, but it would be impossible to get them again, so I can't let them go.

4 years in a case, crikey, by 4 months here it'd be gone . Sounds like you could shed some and find the 335 you really want, without any real risk. The unused ones mustn't be ones you're really bothered with or they'd be getting played - then hunt around for the right 335. take your time and nail the right one. Seems like a win all round from here.

There was a great one in a local auction, 80s, felt great, had the nicest subtle burst I've seen yet, couldn't raise the cash in time. But the fuse was lit so I sold some on and ended up with a Greco 335. Far happier having one thing I want and use than a few unused ones.

To me guitars sat unused for ages become dead weight 'possessions', they've stopped being useful musical tools. Far better to have a few that cover different bases, that get used. But that's a playing perspective not the collector one which is polar opposite I guess.

I've got about 14-15, but they're all ones I've really wanted, and all of them have something unique about them or some sentimental value. There's only one I want to sell because I don't use it.

This has been a life long "push-pull" thing for me.  I've probably owned 100 guitars in my life, 17 at one time being the record.  I'm down to 10 now, sold a Squier Strat that wasn't getting played last week.  I have one more that I could live without, the rest all have relevance and will probably be mine for life.    I do seem to crave another Tele but for now I'm OK.

I've probably gone through 150 guitars in my life, but the one i have now is my favourite and its actually far more liberating just owning and using one guitar. I don't have to choose if a guitar is going to sound better for a part on a track, i just go in and make mine work. Its made me a better player and a better writer because i'm now not relying on different guitar tones, i'm pushing the way i play to get results.

The ones i use most of all are a penco sg copy that sits beside the chair and my overwater for when i play with the band .... all the rest i get out now and then for a change when rehearsing ..

I looking out for 335 guitar and already have a load of guitars sitting at home so i have decided it will be one in one out ...

So i have been trying to think which can go and im struggling with the fact of getting rid of any .....even the ones i dont use ....

Does anyone else have this problem.....serious question..

It's a mental health problem. You are associating your gear as part of your ego. Once you start looking at your gear as just tools to do a job, they are a lot easier to let go. Say to yourself "I am not defined by what I own".

It's pointless keeping gear you dont use. Sell it and use the money for something else you can improve your lifestyle with (not more gear). A new hobby or holiday or something.

I've definitely been guilty of hoarding stuff over the years, but have changed my way of thinking about it thesedays.

Mine are mostly solids - nothing remotely 335ish, they're too big for me.

I had a lovely 64 Tele that I bought in the early 80s, it was my dream guitar and I felt it was all I needed and was going to last me a lifetime, then it got stolen. After I calmed down, I realised it was pointless getting too attached to a guitar. Now I don't really care at all what I play. They're just lumps of wood that make very slightly different sounds.
It's the way you play that makes the biggest difference.

I've learnt that lusting over guitars is fine, but these days I have managed to get to the point where I'm comfortable with the difference between need and want - - - it's not my guitar holding me back, it's me. Maybe long term I might get myself something different but for now I'm very happy with my two electrics.

Is there a difference? OK mentalist is a derogatory term, the collectors that I know (not of guitars, one of comics, one of action figures and one of vintage record players) All have anxiety/control issues. Sorry if the term upset anybody, twas a lazy description.

Collectors are unusual characters, thats for sure. But then so are minimalists.

I usually only buy if I see a new guitar at an amazing price nowadays. I have too many. But, the thing is, some of my friends grew up spending THOUSANDS to upgrade or recondition a car, to only lose THOUSANDS when selling them. I really do mean THOUSANDS. I've always bought cars a little more carefully and I wouldn't dream of dropping £25k on a new one or financing for years and years.

It's a very positive hobby. Guitar and bass is relaxing, stress relieving, creative, good for socialising, etc etc etc.

I totally see why someone would only want one bass, one acoustic, one elec guitar. But, I understand the other side and see why some have a hell of a lot!

....and why not? If you can afford it, enjoy yourself. Guitars can hold decent value and potentially gain value. My dad is the same with his cycling.

It's no different to people spending £6k to go on a luxury holiday every year to similar places.....do what you enjoy. Do it all if you can!
