Could somebody please explain the theory of phasing and flinging and how they differ? Many thanks
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    There's an article here that explains it:

    @not_the_dj good find.

    Personally I prefer flanging for "classic rock" and phase for heavier styles, but that doesn't mean that the two can't be used vice versa.

    Apples and oranges aren't they?

    Flanger is more closely related to a chorus pedal.

    A sig-nat-eur? What am I meant to use this for ffs?! Is this thing recording?

       Ya, and there's an awful lot of recorded "chorus" sounds that were actually done with a flanger.   I can get a lot of "uber-chorus" sounds out of my Flanger pedal.

    As a fairly recent user of phase I was suprised at how well it works with some styles and some of what I thought was wah or auto wah on old reggae records was possibly phaser. But Frankus' description is about right. If you just fancy some fruit ( eg adding a generally wobbly sound to your playing) probably either would do but if you are in the mood for a crunchy Braeburn ( or Jazz apple! eg chasing a specific Van Halen sound) then a satsuma won't do the job.
