There is a bit of a resemblance, now that I think about it.

RIP Barry Norman.  I very rarely agreed with his opinions on films, but I still watched his programme nearly every week, it was a fixture in the TV schedules for so many years.

I watched him on 'Film...' for many years, I thought he was good. Better than the replacement by a country mile...!

I definitely didn't agree with him about quite a lot of films - I tend to much more with Mark Kermode - but he was the one who first made me look at films on a deeper level than just watching them, since he was the BBC's film critic back when I was a teenager. Could never stand Jonathan Ross either!

I'll remember his great insensitivity and lack of humility regarding an actor's death just after his suicide; attributes which were a key part of his persona.

I agree with you about Norman and Kermode, but although I'm thoroughly bored with Jonathan Ross and his tired, lazy, repetitive chat show I'll always have fond memories of his earlier work like The Incredibly Strange Film Show and Mondo Rosso.  I think he was OK during his stint on the BBC Film... programme too.

I always watched his show, but I never liked his inability to appreciate a comedy. He did feel like one of those icons of my youth though.
