Best 10 albums of 2017 so far............

What's Hot

Over halfway through the year, thought it would be interesting to hear yours. My ten favourite so far, in no particular order:

  1. Slowdive – Slowdive

  2. Ride – Weather Diaries

  3. Mark Lanegan – Gargoyle

  4. Mastodon – Empire of Sand

  5. Chris Stapleton – From a Room

  6. Grandaddy – Last Place

  7. Tinariwen – Elwan

  8. Julia Jacklin – Don't let the kids win (cheating here as it was released in 2016)

  9. Public Service Broadcasting – Every Valley

  10. To be filled……………it would be Sleaford Mods if I had got round to it.

To my surprise I've only got five new-release albums this year, although I've bought a lot of albums. And even one of those is a bit of a cheat.

    1. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Remastered Deluxe Edition
    2. Roger Waters - Is This The Life We Really Want?
    3. Harry Styles - self-titled
    4. Rag'n'Bone Man - Human
    5. Now That's What I Call Music! 96

    Must try harder... :)

I think they may well be the only 2017 releases I've bought... so they're my top 2, but not in that order.

I see Siena Root have a new album which I'll probably get soon.

I could easily listen to at least 2/3 a day purely through commuting, easily done

Oh, I forgot one I have bought:

    Royal Thunder - Wick

Although, like their previous album, it's a bit of a disappointment - they've gone too mellow.

Assuming 8 hours of sleep a day there have been about 3,000 hours of being awake so far this year.

An album is typically what, 45 minutes long?

So listening to ten albums would have taken up only 0.25% of your waking time so far this year.

I reckon I've probably listened to thirty or forty new albums this year - or at least that's how many I've made it all the way through. I work from home twice a week on average and Spotify serves up at least 20 new tracks each of those days, of which two or three are interesting enough that I'll listen to the album they come from.

  • I make time to listen to music as it is an addiction; on headphones at work and when gardening/diy. Also blasted in the car when driving around during work. I also often have headphones on in bed when falling asleep (is it just me who does this??) A lot of unknowns for me suggested above, I shall investigate. First listen to The New Year, I like a lot.

Instead of asking "Where do you get the time to actually listen to that many albums?", my question should have been 'Where do you go to learn about recent or good new albums?' I don't listen to music while on the move. Don't use Spotify. And there are no local music shops not forgetting that the pop radio stations are voiced/targeted for young people, thus irritating for me to listen to. Also Ed Sheerin doesn't count as music, new or otherwise....
