Not sure how old this site is, but it piqued my interest when Hilbish said they were putting their Beta Preamp pedal up for rent. You can rent any equipment from 2 or 4 weeks, lending out pedals, preamps, power amps and DIs.

The selection at the moment isn't too great - but what they do have entices me greatly: Black Arts Toneworks, Dwarfcraft, Ventris, Verellen amps, Hilbish amps, EHX, and quite a bit more.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 4 week rental of the Hilbish...anybody used this site before? Any horror stories etc? They're not going to send me a tattered box with a broken preamp are they?

I remember a few of these "business ventures" over the years. They all seem to disappear as fast as they arrive. Seems to be a bit of a doomed business model I think.
    How very rock and roll

The tricky thing is folks that are into pedals know that if you buy one second hand you can try it for as long as you like then sell it on for much the same price if you don't like it.

For new pedals you can try them out and as long as you send them back within 14 days you get your money back (perhaps a slight moral issue with that one but there you go).

They've only been running for a few weeks so I can't imagine their gear will be too shoddy just yet.

I too am intrigued by the Verellen Preamp.

I can see the model being a little flawed for buying effect pedals, but I think it could work for preamps/amps which could work for specialist recording projects where buying an amp/preamp would only be needed for a few weeks or so.

Are they US based? If they are does the rental period start when you receive it?

Based in Scotland I believe. When you decide on a start date, there is a little calendar where the delivery dates are shaded in red, then the official start date is when the pedal is delivered. Not sure the stance on returns.

Yeah @earwighoney I think these guys have thought a little outside the box. As well as a focus on pre/power amps and such, most of the products they rent out you cannot find anywhere in this country for love nor money. Hell, the Verellen and Hilbish stuff you can't get anywhere in Europe.

  • Hi, Darren here from FXPedalRental. Hopefully I can provide the answers for you all.

We are a new company, UK based. Currently all our goods are in tip top condition, you won't be sent anything that doesn't work.
We want to initially offer brands that are hard to access here so thus far Verellen and Hilbish, Black Arts, GlouGlou etc are popular choices naturally.
We don't intend to vanish as quickly as we started however that will depend on how people use the site. It's not set up to make massive profits, but to invest back into a larger library for people to use.

The main idea is have the opportunity to try something you are curious about with your own equipment because that makes all the difference. No pressure. No hassle. I have lost more selling equipment on than the price of renting. And I've done it time and time again. Until now.

I don't believe in the buy it to try it and send it back angle because I've worked in retail. But that's just me.

We are open to suggestions and contactable so feel free. It's early days.
We are also looking at offering a one week rental option at the moment if anyone would like to see that added.

    All the best, Darren.

At the moment it's all rather pointless.

There's nothing worth getting excited over there at all and I simply can't see the point of it if you're only going to stock average or ridiculously niche pedals.

No 'wow' factor there at all.

    Welcome to the forum Darren.

  • Yes welcome. And if you could drop the 4 weeks prices to the two week prices. I would be in. I think I paid £100 used for the Pharoah so needs to be fairly cheap for someone. Or they may as well buy. But for the merris etc this is cool

Sorry, overly harsh above- I'll elucidate

If you'd got a stock of real vintage classics, Triangle Muffs, CE1's, Bud box Dynacomps, Fuzzfaces, Space Echoes etc then I think you'd be onto a winner.

But boutique pedals are so for a reason.

I'd focus on the stuff that has a broader appeal. Plus, if you're funding them personally, you'll get a better ROI on a vintage pedal.

    Well that's you told Darren....

I recently bought a Hilbish off Darren / FXpedalrental and all I can say is the service and advice was top draw. He went above and beyond with questions / queries etc and my amp arrived the next day. And if you're thinking of getting a Hilbish... it's ace. So much so that it immediately made me put my Verellen preamps up for sale.

  • Thanks for the input everyone.
Pricing will never suit everyone but the introduction of a 1 week option may help. Strangely the 4 week option has been most popular so far.

Also so please consider the price includes shipping both ways. By the time you deduct that, costs, Vat, packaging we won't be retiring to the Bahamas anytime soon. As I said, this is a library that will grow in size if people support it as the money goes back into more stock.

Using the Pharoah example, that's a £180 pedal plus shipping. That means someone lost £80 selling to you. I can only speak for me, but I'd rather gamble £20 to try something first. If it costs me £200 to have that pedal that I know works in my set up and will be there a long time, I'd be happy. Again though, that's just me.
You got a great pedal at a great price but that doesn't always happen and I can't base this business on second hand prices.

Its not all about second hand however. Sometimes we just want to try something for inspiration.

If if you sign up to the newsletter, Facebook, instagram you'll get info on further discount codes also. Again bizarrely as much as people ask for cheaper prices I just offered a discount code at the end of last month - no one used it!

i could look into a fretboard members discount perhaps...

You can't call yourself a guitarist with flawless logic like that.

    Outrageous.

Where's your spirit? Where's your love of wanton waste?

    Thanks for the elucidation.

agreed, there is much to add. I could run rampant with wants however I still have to fund it.
Vintage bits would be on the list also. If I'm honest, paying lots of money for rare, vintage gear and then sending it off to musicians to destroy scares me a little. It's harder to replace.
There is a market for it though and in time we will hopefully oblige!

  • Yeah I understand the fear with vintage gear. I would love it though. I guess people would pay higher for them as well
