OX4 OMG

What's Hot

Have to say am stunned by the OX4 PAF pickups I just put in my 61 reissue SG.

Bought the guitar last year on the Coda site and always loved the look and feel but was underwhelmed by the tone of the 57 Classics - woofy neck and toppy, harsh bridge. I changed the pots and it made it slightly more forgiving but not enough.

Someone recommended OX4 and I discovered not only that Ryan Adams and Jason Isbell are big fans but that the owner Mark Stow lives only about ten mins from me here in Oxford.

I ordered a set of his low-wind PAFs, he made them in a week and I picked them up yesterday at his house and had a decent chat with him. Told him about this place and he may sign up, he says.

Anyway, the pickups are simply wonderful. Night and day with the Gibsons. It's like they have breathed soul into this SG which sounds pretentious, I know, but it finally has some character to it. They are incredibly articulate and balanced, great note separation, warm, woody, all the cliches we like in a PAF. It's like a completely different guitar, clean or overdriven.

Mark is a dedicated tone hound - and a good mate of Simon Keats (Origin FX) who makes the world's finest compressors in my view. If they ever collaborate on something it'll be worth a look.

I hate 57 Classic /Plus. I swapped mine out for a set of Lollar Imperiala.

Ironically 57 Classics work very well in 335's, just one of those things guaranteed to drive us even more mad with option anxiety

Great aren't they, I had a pair put in my Les Paul and it's transformed it. I just couldn't get on with the Burstbuckers so took the plunge and I don't regret it one bit, played through my JTM45 the guitar just sings now. I find I'm picking up the guitar a lot more often now the OX4's are in. I'm glad you like yours, I hope you get the same amount of enjoyment out of them as I do mine.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

I'm looking at a set of these for my CS-336. I also used to live about 10 minutes from him, so feel a bit of an affinity.

What magnets did you go for?

They certainly aren't cheap, my next set will probably be oil city as I haven't given those a try yet.

Another fan here, and a quick question for Mark

I have an set with the modern, square covers. Are you able to provide them with the rounder edged covers?

+1  OX4 Hot Duanes in my 2001 R9 are just peachy!  As a comparison they replaced a set of BK's, they are that good.

Another delighted user here. Replaced a set of Stormy Mondays in one of my 335s and I couldn't be happier.
