It's largely down to personal preference and playing style.

So everyone's rig will be different to an extent.

For me personally I could get by with a decent distortion and a delay(assuming I can drive the amp naturally).

    Tuner,
    TubeScreamer of some sort,
    Wah,
Chorus if you're into that sort of thing,
and after that it's personal choice. I like to leave a space for a pint glass and some talcum powder.

You are Kirk and ICM £5.

For me, a delay is pretty important, and I like fuzz as well. If I'm using single-coils I will want a compressor too.

My current small board is about as minimal as I want to go atm:

Wah - (tuner yet to be purchased) - compressor - fuzz - OD - trem - delay - reverb
    - "I'm going to write a very stiff letter. A VERY stiff letter. On cardboard."

Delay and some sort of lead boost, IMO.

    Wah & Overdrive in the front;
Analogue Delay & Chorus in the loop.

Tuner-drive-delay I could get by with. Over and above this it would be more drive flavours and trem/phase for mods.

  • Old originals band: Tuner, Rat, Delay would've done it at a push.

Old covers band: Tuner, Rat, Chorus would've probably just about worked but been a bit shit.

  • Tuner, Boost, Drive, Vibe, Delay. (Drive can be 1 to 3 pedals at least!, Vibe is the king of all modulation)

That's basically my gigging board right there, albeit with a clean boost (Carl Martin Hydra) instead of the BM/SD-1 :)

However, tuner aside...my amp takes care of all the distortion, and I'd quite happily gig with just a delay pedal if I had to.

    But yeah, in seriousness...

I need wah, phaser, dual delay (one set to regular digital mode, and the other set to reverse mode) and reverb. I don't really need anything else, but I do use a volume pedal as well, as it is more convinient than using the knob on the guitar.

Just stripped my big board to build a simple ready to go affair.

Overdrive, chorus, delay. ( + tuner). Enough to get by for most work I do, I have more stuff but they will come out for special occasions as applicable.

Delay and a Transparent Drive - you can always dig-in hard on your picking to get some extra aggressive tone - and shout and jump up and down more to convey mayhem...

  • If I play a strat style guitar where I can access the volume pot I can get away with just tuner and delay.

My current setup is: tuner -> gate -> boost -> volume pedal -> (amp) -> delay

I get my modulation from the delay (DD20).  I don't like an entirely wet signal when it comes to modulation but modulated delays sound good to me.

  • I suppose the basic categories are Tuner; EQ (inc Wah); Drive ( boost and/or fuzz/ distortion); Modulation ( inc Tremolo); Time ( reverb/ delay).

So, one from each of those would be relatively versatile ( in a ball park kind of way). So, my board is tuner, OD, clean boost, tremolo, delay ( although its a big one with 3 delays). So I should learn to live without the clean boost and get a wah or auto wah on there and I would be ready for anything!

    +1

Well, I go for pedals in that vein rather than those exact ones- I probably prefer an SD1 to a TS but it's similar and I prefer my dano timmy clone to my bluesbreaker clone, but they're both in the same ballpark- something ts-like and something more transparent.

Well and a tuner too, obviously.

That's not to say that given the option I might not like some other pedals etc., but I could get by with those 3 (assuming I'm allowed to pick the amp myself).

if i had to be brutal, i would need:

    compressor (analogman bi-comp)
    tuner (anything)
    fuzz (Black Arts Pharaoh)

...all into a big clean amp...I don't solo, so can get away without any modulation or time pedals...and my clean passages can be dry without impacting the mood of the songs.
