Music films

What's Hot
There's a thread about the Anvil movie, which inevitably lead to a mention of Spinal Tap & Still Crazy.
What other good films about music do you recommend?

I'll mention:
Fiction:

Almost Famous.
One of my favourite films, about a fictional rock band learning to cope with increasing success. Worth watching for the Tiny Dancer scene alone.

Whiplash
College drummer getting emotionally battered by his tutor. Great performance from JK Simmons.

Documentaries:
It Might Get Loud
The Edge, Jack White & Jimmy Page in a room, talking & playing guitars.

20 Feet from Stardom
An exploration of backing singers & their changing role in modern music.

+1s For Almost Famous and 24 hr Party People.

I very much enjoyed Velvet Goldmine - thinly veiled fictional Bowie bio.

Mission to Lars (not really about music but great).

Slade in Flame. Edit: Just watched this again - just brilliant. There's some real darkness in there.

Spinal Tap. This goes without saying really. There's not a day that goes by when I don't say something that refers to it in some way. Utterly indispensable.

From the Sky Down - Documentary about the making of Achtung Baby

Life of Riley - BB King doc

The Blues - six (I think) DVD set from Martin Scorsese about the history of (you've guessed it) the blues.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown - documentary about Motown and particularly the musicians.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • 'Love and Mercy' a fictional account of the recording of Pet Sounds has just gone up on Netflix

'Some Kind of Monster' is a good watch even for non metallica fans.

'Love Shines' about Ron Sexsmith recording an album with Bob Rock is fantastic and very touching if you know a bit about Ron in advance.

'Beyond the Lighted Stage' about the third biggest band in history, Rush.

That Thing You Do! - fiction.

Backbeat - about Stuart Sutcliffe and the early Beatles.

Great Balls Of Fire - Dennis Quaid as Jerry Lee Lewis.

    Rockers

Fictional story about a reggae artist in 70's Jamaica, packed with real musicians playing themselves.  Gives a great insight into the place and time.

If you want a laugh then Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. it may be daft but a lot of its spot on and the music's great. Jack White as Elvis is an added bonus.

If you like that check out "Metal Evolution" by Sam Dunn. Brilliant series about the, erm, evolution of metal.
The same guy did Iron Maiden: Flight 666.

    Walk the line.
Perfect if you're a cash fan or depressed. Good performance from ol whats his face, Wacky Phoenix?

    Through the never.
Like a live gig but mixed with a sci fi story/movie about Dane Dehaan trying to find metallicas bag containing the soul of Cliff Burton, or Kirks 3rd Wah Wah.

    Lemmy.
Its a documentary about some old geezers life. Smokes a lot and drinks. Features input from many famous bands.

    8 mile.
White guy faces adversity and struggles from a tough beginning. Drops out of school but reads the dictionary to create rhymes and word plays to enable him to develop a career in a predominantly black industry, while also suffering addiction and heartbreak.

    A streetcat named bob.
A homeless bloke portrayed by an actor plays guitar and saves a cat. Typically the small furry mammal however, saves him.

    Spice world the movie.
20 years ago this was released. A group of 90's birds wear sports clothes and tracksuits while lip syncing and generally causing all manner of hilarity while a fictional storyline worthy of saturday morning kids tv keeps the pace.

    Ray.
Blind bloke plays the piano, and gets fucking good at it. Loosely based on a true story, featuring Jamie Foxx.

    Purple Rain.
Film based on a song, based on a Prince.

    Moonwalker.
Black or White, who knows, but this classic piece of history features a tommy gun and a smooth criminal.

Ziggy Stardust & the spiders from Mars.
Largely fictional depiction of the true story of 'Biker mice from Mars'. Featuring Bowie.

    La Bamba.
Buddy Holly had a mate with him on board when they died following a tragic aviation accident. This is his story.

    Yellow Submarine.
Bunch of trendy fellas with hair to rival Jaime Winston in her recent portrayal of Dame Barbera Windsor. Pretty nifty submarine also features. Its also yellow.

    Sid & Nancy.
Couple of London punks are punks. Also featuring a tubulant relationship and probably drug use. And hairspray.

    Back to the 50's
This disaster piece of a 90's tv movie wasn't even available on straight to vhs.
Follow the S club 7 as they drive not a Delorean, but still somehow travel back in time. Will they ever get back, to the future? Lets hope not. Featuring Rachel Stevens n a young Holly Willoughby.

The only easy day, was yesterday...
