fretboard blank thickness?

If you were making a fairly standard Fender type neck, what would be the ideal thickness for the fretboard blank before starting?

I've just bought a fretboard and it looks pretty thick (can't measure it, I'm at work) and I'm wondering if I should reduce it down before starting to work on it.

Thoughts?

    1/4"

A lot of blanks do come thicker.     you can use thicker or thinner as long as you allow for it in the overall neck thickness and truss rod depth.

Ta. It's more than that, I think I'll take it down a bit.

yeah, its not uncommon to have fretboard blanks up to 10mm thick - usually un-planed at that thickness though.

You normally don't want it any thinner than 5mm

A lot of places supply thicker as it gives options.  Some classicals can be nearly 10mm thick.  Also, it allows some fudge room if the wood moves and needs to be re-surfaced
