how to be creative with my multi fx/amp?

when i actually pick up my guitar again (hangs head in shame) i want to start using my vox vt 40+ amp options,and boss me-25 multi effects a lot more.

when i have used them i just go through a few presets and then leave it at that,but part of the reason of buying them was to use them and try to get some different sounds.

how do you go about being creative in regards to amp settings/fx pedals to come up with something a bit different/interesting e.t.c?

i play an ibanez s 420 wd btw through them.

I've got a VT20+ and gave up on the patches because every time it swapped patches the volume reset.

I use the phaser and tremolo a bit.

Biggest problem I've got is getting a good standard clean tone out of it. 

To many knobs to play with and I'm far to impatient! 

)

i mainly try and get an alex lifeson type guitar sound (80's period as i am trying to learn red barchetta atm/play some other rush covers too) at present using chorus/delay and hall reverb (using my me-25 pedal).

i do use the vc 30 amp setting also to try and get a good distorted sound with above effects (through vox amp settings also).

it's like a giant black hole all the options with them ;-)

 The number of options is its downfall for me.

I just wanna plug in and play not be pushing buttons and turning knobs
