Anyone Into Rockabilly?

What's Hot

I think partly since I got a Danelectro, but in the last couple of years I've been listening to quite a lot of Rockabilly and using some of that sound and style. I've got some great compilation CDs, Imelda May, some Kitty, Daisy And Lewis, Kim Lenz, Hillbilly Moon Explosion etc, but is there anyone I need to hear? All recommendations welcome. Also into a lot of Surf Rock too. Gotte love that heavy slap back echo!

  • There's lots of great compilation CDs around - it's hard to go wrong.  And get on YouTube too - the Delray Rockets are great but there's a really strong scene.
Stray Cats are best of the modern groups but Johnny Cash, warren Smith, Billy Lee Riley, Carl Perkins are worth checking out.
Dont forget to adjust your quiff before playing your guitar, it makes all the difference.

  • I don't know much about rockabilly but Darrell Higham had a career pre Imelda May and has gone back to that style since the split. If he does any more tour dates he'd be worth catching.
I used to be quite into The Palladins who mixed up Texas blues and rockabilly, close cousin of Horton Heat mebbe.

Thanks for all these, guys. It was actually Setzer/Stray Cats that kind of sent me down this road.

  • Cliff Gallup was the guitarist who invented a lot of this stuff on the early Gene Vincent records. Still sounds way ahead of its time.

  • I like a bit of psychobilly, I think I have a Meteors picture disc somewhere.

purchased 'Red Hot Rockabilly' from Amazon - 50 track compilations CD - some I've never heard before, but others you probably have - but a great introduction and allows you to have a few new names to explore further be it youtube or additional albums to buy

totally - and for me it gave me names and a route into other songs/bands once I started touring youtube with them - Playing along with it gave me an insight into jump, swing, rock n roll etc that I feel I can join in with - I love Setzer, but know full well I could not achieve any of his ability, which he initially acquired from such songs - But strip it back to its roots and I feel I can work with such songs etc

  • Any record with Cliff Gallup on it is worth a look. Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps for example.

also check out Grady Martin - under- rated player with Johnny Burnette - start of with Lonesome Train
