the pickup rings will be  the very last job i do so its up in the air until then
It’s not my time, effort, and money so it’s absolutely none of my business and not my decision to make, but for me everything else about this guitar looks like it was always meant to be the way it is (rather than being a clever adaptation of an existing design), and that tiny little inconsequential nick out of the bridge pickup ring would spoil that and bug the hell out of me...

So my (totally unsolicited) vote is “no pickup rings” :-)
Don't ask me, I just play the damned thing...

I like that, it's looks a bit OTT at that size, but I''m sure at the size it will be on the guitar will look great.

I like it Wes.  Are you going to do it in red, like the Firebird?  The guitar is looking great btw.  I just booked a trip over, so will bring the Les Paul with me.  I will be there from April 25th, through to May 12th.  If that first weekend works, I could bring it down then.  I'll also bring the old scratchplate.

I'm currently considering the best way to do it.   I think I used a rub on decal on the last firebird  I built, and going that way would give a wide range of colour options.

I am moving away from the idea of a silver painted perspex gretsch style plate.   If I was doing that I would likely do a vinyl sticker underneath the guard

I think the options I like are a black guard with white logo or white guard with red logo

Since the rings are decorative, would it be worth matching them to the scratchplate?  I know it's more work, but just a thought.

Originally I was thinking the other way, match the plate to the rings.

I could easily match the rings to the plate if I still did the Gretsch style Perspex plate - they can all be painted any colour on the back

made a few plates because i really cant decide

Or clear, which would actually be sprayed on the back.   I am actually starting to consider something like gold in proper gretcsh fashion

If it's plain, I like the black.  The white with a red logo would look authentic.  I'd go with silver not gold on the clear, just because it matches the rest of the guitar.

  • I find it hard to pick without the headstock in view.

With just the close up I’m thinking the white.

Yes id say black too.. It ties up nicely with the dark fretboard.  In saying that id be tempted by the see through one, just cos its a bit different    If its to sell, maybe include all three in the deal so the owner can decided depending on their mood...

Whilst paint is curing, we may as well have more pictures of plates - i sprayed the back of the clear one silver

i think it looks pretty smart with the rings (and likely a matching truss rod cover)

a but boring without the rings

whereas the blackplate looks better without the rings

Black without the rings for me.

  • I prefer without the rings, but black or white pickguards both work.
