One Song From Each Steely Dan Album...

What's Hot

edited September 2017 in Music
So Walter Becker's sad passing has me in full on SD mood. For other SD fans, what would be the one song you'd pick from each album.

Here's mine as a starter for 10:

Can't buy a thrill: Dirty Work
Countdown to Ecstacy: My Old School
Pretzel Logic: Ricky don't lose that number
!aty Lied: Your gold teeth part II
Royal Scam: Don't take me alive
Aja: Aja, tie with Black Cow
Gaucho: Gaucho

Feel free to do the same with Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go, unlike those above, which I know like the back of my hand, I just don't know them well enough - need to revisit.

Your turn...

  • Here is my current selection, although ask me the same question next week and it could be completely different, so many fantastic songs to choose from on each album, and to pick just one is very difficult.

Can't buy a thrill - Reelin in the years

    Countdown to ecstacy - Bodhisatva

Pretzel logic - Any major dude will tell you

    Katy lied - Bad sneakers

Royal scam - Don't take me alive

    Aja - Josie

    Gaucho - Gaucho

Two Against nature - Jack of speed

    Everything must go - Godwhacker

Can't Buy A Thrill: Reeling In The Years
Countdown To Ecstacy: My Old School
    Pretzel Logic: Pretzel Logic
    Katy Lied: Black Friday
    Royal Scam: Kid Charlemagne
    Aja: Peg

The only solo I've never learned of those is My Old School, which I'd like to learn one day.

    It's not a competition.

Yes I like the other albums but I can't think of a favourite track. Also, Peg was the final album with the classic guitar solos for me.

Hmmnn .... that would take me an age to process and I'm actually supposed to be working! Suffice to say that I'm a BIG SD fan, possibly the best crafted music out there for me. I would definitely include Bodhisatva - I was so obsessed with those cool guitar solos when I was younger. Still love them both.

Some great suggestions - the only track I can add is FM - as far as I know it is not on any SD album other than the greatest hits - otherwise find a copy of the FM sound track with various other artist/songs - 2 versions of this song - one with a sax solo and 1 with a guitar solo - many great tracks to pick my favourite SD track but FM ranks very high

FM is great. I especially love the version with the Tom Scott sax outro. He plays some wonderful 'outside' lines that somehow work so well.

    It's not a competition.

Can't buy a Thrill: Reelin' in the years

Countdown to Ecstasy: My Old School

Pretzel Logic: Any Major Dude would tell you (for some reason it reminds me of Snoopy/Peanuts)

    Katy Lied: Bad Sneakers

Royal Scam: Bollocks! Ok Kid Charlemagne but Haitian or Green Earrings and Don't take me alive could've made the running

Aja: Josie but Peg is in there, too...aarrrghh

    Gaucho: Babylon Sisters

    Two Against Nature: Cousin Dupree

Two more tracks that are worth a mention are "FM" and "Here at the Western World" (this featured on the Greatest Hits album and is an absolute corker)

    Solo albums?

I'd pick "Lucky Henry" from 11 Tracks of Whack (Becker) and from Fagen, I'd pick "Walk between the raindrops" from The Nightfly.
    "Tomorrow's Girls" from Kamakiriad.

Sadly, it ends there as whilst being a big, long-time fan, I'm not familiar with anything after these.

I was fortunate enough to play in a great band in the late 90s that played Doobies, Eagles, Toto and Steely Dan material. To date, the latter proved to be some of the most challenging and satisfying stuff I've ever played live.
