Can't buy a Thrill: Reelin' in the years

Countdown to Ecstasy: My Old School

Pretzel Logic: Any Major Dude would tell you (for some reason it reminds me of Snoopy/Peanuts)

    Katy Lied: Bad Sneakers

Royal Scam: Bollocks! Ok Kid Charlemagne but Haitian or Green Earrings and Don't take me alive could've made the running

Aja: Josie but Peg is in there, too...aarrrghh

    Gaucho: Babylon Sisters

    Two Against Nature: Cousin Dupree

Two more tracks that are worth a mention are "FM" and "Here at the Western World" (this featured on the Greatest Hits album and is an absolute corker)

    Solo albums?

I'd pick "Lucky Henry" from 11 Tracks of Whack (Becker) and from Fagen, I'd pick "Walk between the raindrops" from The Nightfly.
    "Tomorrow's Girls" from Kamakiriad.

Sadly, it ends there as whilst being a big, long-time fan, I'm not familiar with anything after these.

I was fortunate enough to play in a great band in the late 90s that played Doobies, Eagles, Toto and Steely Dan material. To date, the latter proved to be some of the most challenging and satisfying stuff I've ever played live.
Well if we're getting into solo albums Cos, then Kamakiriad holds a very special place for me, as a complete album I prob listen to it more than any SD album. I think largely because I was "there" when it came out, and very much into my SD discovery at the time. I do think it is a truly remarkable album, such a unique sound to it.

    Hmmm...

Can't Buy A Thrill - Do It Again
Countdown to Ecstasy - The Boston Rag
    Pretzel Logic - Barrytown
    Katy Lied - Doctor Wu
The Royal Scam - fuck... either Kid Charlemagne, Don't Take Me Alive or Sign In Stranger
Aja - half of me says it's got to be Peg, the other half says it's got to be Home At Last
    Gaucho - Hey Nineteen

Not familiar with the last two albums.

As for Fagen on his own:

The Nightfly - really really difficult choice, but probably Walk Between Raindrops
Kamakiriad - Trans-Island Skyway... dat groove
Morph The Cat - I don't really know this album
    Sunken Condos - Miss Marlene

    Great idea for a thread.

Countdown to Ecstasy and Aja. I'd keep a secret backup hard drive with The Royal Scam on it too.

If including the Fagen solo albums, then it'd be The Nightfly and Aja. Both are pure bliss from start to finish.

It would be a wrench never hearing Doctor Wu again though. Probably my favourite Dan song, but it sits in an album I'm not as keen on.

Phil Woods's sax solo on it is one of my favourite instrumental solos ever recorded. It is pure sonic ecstasy.

As a lot of people have mentioned "Haitian Divorce", it's hard to imagine all those guitar fills, and there's a lot of them, being in the song without the voice box. And, let's not forget that originally, the guitar didn't have that  effect treatment and Walter Becker went in afterwards and added the voice box - genius.

A few years ago I was selling a Linn Turntable.
A middle aged couple turned up but the guy was not sure......
I put Donald Fagen's The Nightfly on the deck and played track 3 - loud.

The woman immediately  told her husband to get his money out.
As they were leaving I handed her the album.  :)

"IGY" is one of those songs that grizzly old-school FOH mixers like to balance a PA system on before they run a sound check, apparently.

The guitar in that track is some of the most tasteful on a Steely Dan album.  I didn't know that about the voice box, but it fits the song perfectly.

Indeed - because it's mixed so well. Aja is also a good one for that.
