What strings do you use?

What's Hot
Thought this could make for an interesting thread, forgive me if there's already one similar -

What strings do you use for your electric? Personally, I started with 9s, went to 11s, 12s, 13s, back to 11-52 and now have settled on 10-52. I've been through EBs, Rotosound, D'Addario, Dean Markley and have now found that 'thing' in Dunlops.

11s. Plain third (18) on solidbodies, wound (22-ish) on semi-hollows.

Usually D'Addarios or DRs. (Annoyingly DR don't do them with a wound third, so I have to change that.)

  • Elixir 9's. I used to use Ernie Ball Super Slinky. I use 9's cos I have skinny fingers, like E.T.

  • D'Addario 10's.

I find Rotosounds lifeless & Ernie Ball's feel slimey.

  • On electric it's D'AddarioXL 10's(was 11's when I played in a band, they lasted longer and my hands were stronger).  I prefer D'Addario for all my guitars, nylon and steel acoustic and bass.

  • 10-52 for D standard and drop C, 11s for E standard (I just prefer more tension for some reason in standard...).

Elixir 10's. I have short, fat, sweaty, un-coordinated fingers.

I tend to use 11s on electrics 13s on acoustics, don't really care about the brand as I don't tend to have the guitar long enough for them to rust or need changing again.

I took my Les Paul in for a setup last year and the Guitar Doc recommended SIT 10's.

So I gave them a try and have been suitably impressed.
They do seem to improve tuning stability and appear stay bright just a bit longer than the Dean Markleys I was using previously.

D'Addario 9 - 46   Usually because it's easy to buy a 3 pack..   I should probably look at buying in bigger packs though.

D'Addario 9's usually but Rotosound, Ernies and GHS are all OK. The last 3 pack of DR's I got were all rusty so I've gone off them!

I moved up from 9-42 to 9-46 and have been using D'Addario XL120 = 9.5 to 44 (hybrid set) for the last couple of years. However, after playing bass for the last couple of months and returning to guitar, I'm ready to move up to 10s and I particularly like the Thomastik Power Bright set.

Linking in another thread on here about tweaking the guitar if you change string gauges, I think my guitars will need a tweak for this one, although they didn't when I moved from 9 - 9.5s (Charlie Chandler takes care of my guitars and did the checks, although I'll see what his opinion is on this latest change).

    Elixir 11's on acoustic

    10 - 46. Though on my Strat I use 10-52.

Not fussy on brands. I get what I can afford at the time. Most of the time I use Legacy strings
