I had the fortune to spend some time with the lovely Doug at lovely Coda with some lovely guitars... (you get the idea)

Anyway, played a couple of CS Jags which had a remarkably creative string mute; Ive never seen one before !

Are these on many Jag models ?

They came on the originals and I believe the AVRI 62 & 65. Did not come on the MIJ/CIJ/MIM

as above - yes on originals - similar idea to what Gretsch used - for muting - look t most old guitars now and they have worn down

a better question might be 'does anyone use one' ?

Mark, Id have loved to have tried it with my pedal board; that is, some nice delay and verb, and maybe a little reverse...

I think most folk just took the mutes off, the rubber goes manky eventually. Always thought it was the bassists that loved a mute ala Mary Kaye.

My 64 Precision has the remnants of the mute on the bridge cover.. it has also gone manky and some of it has fallen off..

I'm not sure if I would ever use it....

  • Yeah, it turns into a weird hard gluey type substance. Removed the original resin-esque strip from my 1962 one and re-foamed - you can buy replacement ones for a couple of quid.

Or, even, Carol Kaye. (Mary Kaye played guitar.)

Yep you're right although Carol was an accomplished jazz guitarist before all the bass session work. I believe Carol does guitar/bass lessons via Skype...

More importantly, were any purchases made, @Wazmeister ?! And what are your impressions of the Jazzmaster vs. Jaguar debate?

Was it a large fortune you spent?
Shouldn't this thread be a NGD?

  • My thin skin Jag came with a string mute and the first thing I noticed was that it pushed everything sharp when engaged. I also think it's preventing the Staytrem bridge from going as low as it needs to be, so it's coming off next string change. I realise that the strings have been on for ages, but it takes a good while for me to kill strings and I'm a bit of a skinflint!
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

The majority of them only stay on until the first string change.

Fender dealers are obliged to leave mutes on until the product is sold. If you want to try an AVRI bass guitar that comes with the metal screening "ashtray" plates, the sustain will be muffled by the rubber strip next to the bridge saddles.

Will the mute fit on the Johnny Marr Jag ?

Will the mute fit on the Johnny Marr Jag ?
Yes, I did it once to my old white one but took it off rather quickly. If I remember right the Marr's aren't drilled for the two mute screws so that would have to be done.

I have one of the matching headstock thin skin ones made about 7 years ago (for Wildwood I think) and that has the string mute on it....

I stumbled on this little demo of what it can sound like, earlier today.
