  • been a fan of Bill Nelson and Be bop deluxe a long time. I like the guitar, not hideously expensive but not cheap, tempting but not sure i can justify it right now

Bloody brilliant guitarist. I find the band hit and miss, but they have some great tunes here and there.

They made in impression on me (Be bop deluxe) in thier hay day and it is sad to read of the treatment and financial disaster metered out to Bill in the subsequent decades, it seems very unfair in the light of the millions others made at the time. Not that he's alone in poor treatment, but it is unfair none the less.

Nice guitar. Looks a bit like a Gretsch, no?
I'm a Be Bop Deluxe fan myself - only discovered them in the last few years. There's a handy cheap box set with their 5 studio albums in. Think the reason they never really made it bigger was because they fell between many genres - sort of start out glam rock, then there's prog elements, pop styling so and their last album - Drastic Plastic - is kind of electro new wave. So I guess they never really found an audience that stuck at the time.

  • I liked some  Be Bop Deluxe songs and had  some friends who were fanatics.  At some point in the 90's I came across a Bill Nelson solo album but it was all techno synth.  I'm glad he's playing guitar again.

  • An opportune moment to direct anyone who interested towards the 2011 eight-disc career retrospective boxed set, "The Practice Of Everyday Life."

Some sophisticated pop songs, some wilfully experimental stuff, a few of those Eighties synth things that guitarists won't like, some tasteful acoustic pieces.
    Be seeing you.

I absolutely love Bill Nelson and Be Bop Deluxe, they're in my all time top 5 favourite bands.

Thanks for that post. Not too keen on the look of that guitar though, I've always associated Bill with that Gibson 345.

  • I like his Campbell Transitone guitar. I remember they were £1500 new, now they're as rare as the proverbial and going for over 2k I think.

I'm a mild-to-moderate Bill Nelson fan in that I like a bit of BBD and some of his solo albums. I particularly like "Practically Wired" but then it's just him blasting out a load of guitar. Some of the others I've owned are a bit more challenging.

I seem to prefer his stuff when he's more of a collaborator - the Channel Light Vessel stuff was great and his playing on David Sylvian's Gone to Earth is sublime (as is the LP).

I do love his "50s Retro Atomic" design sensibility though and this guitar looks great to me. RJ Ronquillo is one of my favourite YouTube discoveries so this demo is a killer combination!

When I was at uni in the 80s a flatmate made a copy look like the front of Axe Victim.
Went to see Bill at Manchester Poly.
I was listening to one of his albums this week.
There is no guitarist anywhere who more merits the term "underrated" than Bill Nelson.

Bill Nelson's Red Noise "Sound on Sound" is one of my favourite albums.

BBD were great too of course and I love playing Maid in Heaven, except it's over to soon.

Not a fan of the guitar personally but Be Bop Deluxe were brilliant. Modern music is in my all time top 10 albums.

  • I once had a jam in a mate's garage with the future-to-be Be-Bop Deluxe keyboard player Simon 'Andy' Clarke! He had a Hammond organ and was a very accomplished musician as I recall.
