What's Hot

Hi all,

Ive got a PAF type pickup in my parts bin and I cant remember where it came from, I had it earmarked at some point to go into something or other.
It has no makers mark on it, anyone able to identify what it could be from the pics below.
Its 50mm spacing with long legs and braided wire and measures 7.49 on a multi meter.
thanks in advance for any help.

  • The black paper tape around the coils looks right for Gibson. The D.C. resistance figure is about right for a '57 Classic Plus.
    Be seeing you.

Looks like a humbucker to me but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Without having it on the bench it's difficult to tell. The tops of the bobbins have the correct molding marks for 50s PAFs, the feet are right, the cover shape appears to be right ... but hard to tell from the pics. Gibson used paper tape over a long stretch of their history, so that's no real indicator ... if one could get a look at the coil pigtails ... in 50s buckers all four tended to be black ... in later ones ... 60 or so onwards they were black and white (I suppose to make hooking up the output simpler for factory workers). Magnet is 'long' and appears to be rough cast ...so that means it's fairly early ...
If it's a copy PAF its a rather good one. However it looks to be wax potted ... which proper PAFs wern't ... unless this is a modification.
Could be an early 60s SG or 335 pickup ... the spacing should be 49.2 rather than 50mm by the way.

Thanks @Funkfingers ,just been looking at tons of pics of the '57 classic and I think your right. What was throwing me was that Ive also got what was sold to me as a '57 classic (out of a 93 OBG LP) that has gibson USA engraved on it.
So for now at least I think I will assume its a '57 Classic

    If it's 93 ... it's had a hard life :-)

Pig tails are the ends of wire that come out of the coil and are soldered to the baseplate and the core wire of the braided cable. Its odd as every 57 classic I have come across ... and I admit that's not as many as older PAFs that come through my workshop ... have had modern plastic bobbins without the small depressed circle tooling marks. Certainly the newer ones have cheap, softer plastic bobbins.
