NGD: Partscaster (Dissection) - Pic Heavy

I acquired this over the weekend.

Fretboard scalloped top to bottom, Klusons, 'Creme' Dimarzio SDS-1's, etc.

This is how it arrived:

However, I couldn't resist doing some forensic exploration, so the screwdrivers came out...

Saddles are 10.8mm in width.

The block is pretty chunky, with a decent weight.

Anyone care to hazard a guess (or guesses) re. it's lineage?

The body looks as if it's been refinished more than once and the whole thing feels like an older build.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not really a Fender.

    No, it's definitely an offender.

Very perceptive, Sir. Very perceptive indeed. ;)

I've seen a lot of Squiers with that pickup route

Indeed. Affinity, IIRC. I did wonder about that, but the routing on this one seems a little more 'rounded' in the corners.

  • It might be me, but do I detect a slight scalloping of the fretboard...?

  • Selector switch, pots, cap and some of the cables look MIJ.

The headstock outline, truss rod adjustment orifice and the markings in the maple remind me of Y series MIC Fender/Squier.

It might be worth removing one Kluson and tapping out the ferrule to check for wood filler.

The splice in the headstock is indicative of a budget instrument.
    Be seeing you.

Definitely.  It made me think of some of the cheapest old Grecos and things like that.  But I'm pretty certain they didn't have that kind of truss rod adjustment.

Old DiMarzio Strat pickups, they were very good back in the day

  • Part it out.

Keep the Klusons and the remains of the DiMarzios. You could probably sell the rest for the same money that you paid for the whole thing. Some eejit will take it on as a project.
    Be seeing you.

Nah, I like the neck, the body's a decent weight and resonant. I've got a few ideas in mind, project-wise.

Truss rod alludes to a Squier.

  • Vibrato is a Gotoh GE101T.

    Machine Heads Kluson Deluxe

    Pickups are Dimarzio SDS-1

99.9% certain body and neck are Squier (Affinity or Standard, IMHO - both seem to have had this routing).

The Affinitys weren't as thick as the Standards if that helps identify?

It looks like a totally original pre-CBS Strat, with unusual (and rare) factory ‘Smuggler’s’ routing, bought from Atoyboy guitars to me....

It's consistent with a pile of 'lightly mauled'  Squier Strats I ended up with a few years back as a result of a chance meeting with a bloke who worked in the returns department at Argos...

Another dead giveaway is an extra screw hole, drilled under the pickguard, in the corner by the lower tone control. The MIC 'guards were of a slightly different outline to the majority.

The change from an eight-hole 'guard to an eleven-hole type would require additional screw holes to be drilled beneath the lower edge of the 'guard.
    Be seeing you.

  • The middle two screw holes for the backplate look even (straight across from each other), I think they're offset on all Fenders? Even on my old Squier they're offset.

As a side note does anybody know why Fender do that?  I've wondered for years...
