I hate black guitars but 3 of my guitars are black because they are amazing playing instruments.
This should give you my position on colour vs playability.

Quilted maple tops in that turquoisy 'swimming pool' colour.

    And 'tobacco sunburst'.

I don't like gold tops at all, and I'm not keen on bursts that fade out to red, rather than black or brown.

Yellow. Don't know why, but it just immediately makes a guitar look like a toy to me.

    Brown...

  • Some colours are just right for one particular guitar though. Olympic White is one of the best Strat colours, but white Les Pauls are an abomination. TV Yellow is absolutely the best Les Paul Junior colour but would look awful on a Strat. And so on.

  • If we're talking solid colours, silver is the only colour I'm not keen on.
I *really* don't like transparent quilty finishes at all. Too fussy by far.

    I said maybe.....

Just realised today that I stop looking immediately if a guitar is red - just don’t like red guitars at all, never have. There’s not a single style that I think it looks good on.
There is one for me ......

    Duesenberg red sparkle

Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

love most stuff PRS but this makes my teeth itch and the bluer version of this well is plain offensive although I am told much loved as a modern colour

now that looks really nasty, I'm not a fan of most finishes on prs tbh, could be the over flamed perfect tops which I hate

Anything like that PRS/shredder trend of awful transparent finishes over horrid overly figured/flamed wood. In fact I can hardly stand any sort of flame as it looks too busy and blingy. Wood should look like wood.

A friend of mine will never own a Sunburst guitar even though he’s a massive Tele fan....whaaaat?

So...what colours turn you off straight away and what are the notable exceptions? (only guitars that are allowed to be silver are Gretsch btw!)
I'm with you on the red, I absolutely hate red guitars. At the moment I'm gassing for a gold guitar or at least a gold scratch plate on a Strat, I think most people would hate that but gas is gas! Having a gold top Les Paul just isn't enough for me, I need more!
Tomorrow will be a good day.

Solid colour - Salmon Pink. Fiesta "Red" is pretty nasty too.

Translucent colour - a lot of "posh" sunbursts are horrible. "Vintage Amber" is awful.

Not a colour, but quilted maple is revolting. Some flame is OK.

Does basswood ding more readily than a nitro finish (you know, the kind of finish that might come on guitars in that price range)  ;)

Soft basswood with a hard but brittle polyester finish is really not a great combination, to be honest. And I am not a nitro snob/fan really.
