I purchased a wine red 50s tribute a few years ago off here ,I like it but not too fussed on the wine red colour so..... do I
A .....flatten the top with wet a dry by a tin of gold spray of manchester tech ,spray top and I have my gold top... but will it look odd with wine red sides and back ? I'm guessing total cost about £40...or
B........sell it for around £400and put extra money  (150??)for a gold top with the right colour natural sides and back ,anyone done A ?and regretted it ?Or over the moon they done it ??

aye was just going to use  wet+dry for the top, take all h/ware off mask sides back fretboard then  1 undercoat and a few gold top top coats ,1 clear laquer on top let it go off for a few days and put everything back ,I know it won't be a problem job but it will do for me ,just don't know if I want to start sanding back a really nice maple top, should I just sell as is ??then look for a gold top .

Mate, you're gonna need to leave it for about 4-5 weeks before putting the hardware back on. You'll also need a respirator, a dry and warm ventilated area for spraying and somewhere to keep the guitar while the nitro gasses off. Tbh, I'd sell it and get the right guitar. A bad paint job could seriously devalue it.

I think I saw the guitar in a link on your other thread. It's a beaut!

You must really hate that wine red colour to risk ruining a perfectly good guitar.
If you've never done it before it might be an idea to practice on a junk guitar.

  • Sell it and get a new guitar - I guaranteee you will fuck up an attempt at refinishing the top, and eve if you dont it wont look right with the red side and back.

thanks for all the advice, to be honest in the back of my mind I was thinking it was a job out of my range ,and also the colour of the sides would look wrong with the gold top so  no respray and I'm going to keep it for now .

Have you considered asking one of the finish guys for a quote to re-do it?

top only is one option but personally I would consider a full re-fin

Also speak to @lonestar he did a great shell pink finish on his LPJ. If you are considering selling and then buying at 150 more, there is currently the risk of that fast becoming 200 due to currency fluctuations.  Also selling rarely goes to plan so you potentiality get 50-100 less than you wanted. Total that up and that refinish isn't that crazy, particularly  if it's on a guitar you already get on with (remember no two guitars are created equally).

Refinishing a set neck guitar will cost at least £300-400. You'll lose every penny of that if you sell it on.

As much as I should be convincing you to head down that route unless you are 100% smitten with it (if you're willing to sell it to buy a gold one...) then I suggest selling it and buying the one that you lust after :)

Sorry, not picking you up right... you mean it'll cost more that or less than £400?

Really? Because when I wanted my strat body refinished (poly to nitro) about 18 months ago the lowest price I could get was £400.

I guess the only way to find out is to get a quote from a pro. :)

Very sure, I have a quote for my LP standard that sitting on while I decide on the burst I actually want.

Fair play to you. I wouldn't touch a set neck for less than £300 ;)

  • Let's see the finished job.

Only then can we make an informed decision.

I mean I'd do it for £100, if you pay me to do a job then by default I am a pro, although you really, really wouldn't want me to do it for you!

At the same time there are probably (definitely on here) people who don't make a living painting guitars (so are not a pro as such) but will give you a professional finish at less of a cost. I'd consider paying them to do it getting a pro finish.
