I need help (= guitar lessons)

I put this in the guitars section rather than the playing and technique one as the latter are rather quiet:

I'm an eternal beginner (ok, I played gigs in my student days but that was more than 20 years ago), always keep a guitar around and make slow progress of sorts but lack focus - I learn to appreciate new stuff but not to play it. I think I could do with some professional help - a good teacher. Would need to be in Sheffield, or via Youtube, and share some of my old-fashioned tastes. How would I go about finding one? I've only been living in the UK for a few years, and I'm not going out much, not even to gigs (they always go on late and work starts early) so the chances of bumping into the right person are nil.

Or maybe I need a group of people to jam with to provide some focus - there are so many things to learn, but where to start? Improve my funk grooves, or learn a 5Royales tune, or get into Malcolm Young? Same problem applies - finding people locally ...

Any hints would be much appreciated!

The registry of guitar tutors is a good place to start http://www.rgt.org/tutors/

  • I'd think googling "guitar tutors sheffield" would turn up quite a few options.  Find a few, contact them and try to get a feel for them via phone/email.  If there's one who seems right arrange a lesson or two - you can always move to someone else if you don't click.

Don't discount the stacks of free tuition available one the web, it covers everything from learning songs note for note, beginners scales to recording. I find YouTube is a great way to learn songs, Justin guitar, martyz songs etc these will teach you some full songs if nothing else.

There's free on-line tuition but you can't beat one to one lessons imho.  Learning the theory can get a bit of a bind but if your going back each week you'll do it to show progress etc.  Doing your grades is a good idea too.  If you find a good teacher they'll probably be teaching at lot of people at all levels of ability.  There's a good chance that they can introduce you to other like minded musicians or even a band looking for guitarists.

    many good points, daveww.

I know about the online lessons and some are very good indeed - but they are not much help if the student lacks direction.

    Hi NPP,

I'm in Sheffield too and in a not too dissimilar position. I go to a blues jam on a Wednesday night fairly regularly that I've found fun and that got me up on stage. It's at Delaney's bar down near the Waitrose on Eccy Road.

I've also been recommended a couple of teachers:

Jane Bowns who is out in Dore
Alan Kennedy who works at Wavelength Music
And the guys at Badge Mysic a Tuition who are next door to Richtone.

Looking into some lessons myself to hopefully help me improve and get beyond the safety of the pentatonic scales

  • I am the same as you & last year I enroled on an adult education evening class (£120 for 2hrs/wk for 26 weeks). It's a group session (me and eight others, all aged 40-60) & I've learned more in the last three months than I have in the last thirty years bumbling along by myself...

  • I had a fantastic tutor, Danny, I used when I was in Sheffield. Specialises mainly in Jazz but is a brilliant player/musician.
