Set list suggestions - country / southern rock

Possible new band so kicking around ideas and while it’s not a genre I usually play I quite like a lot of the bluesy country Americana stuff.
I’m looking for upbeat songs that aren’t overplayed but not too obscure - no sweet home alabama but fortunate son is good mid that makes sense.

Anyone played similar gigs and care to suggest songs that work would be appreciated.

  • I don't know if it's strictly Southern but Grand Funk's We're an American Band - I was watching some Dead Daisies stuff on YouTube and it seemed to go down better than their own songs (and he's Australian), not an uncommon cover. Too rocky?

Steve Earle - Copperhead Road? Recognisable, 3 chords and adaptable.
He also did a version of Jonny 2 Bad and several of his own are great songs and would have some recognisability factor.

Willie Nelson - The Harder they come or the Keith Richards version. Certainly a recognisable song.

For definitive southern rock Molly Hatchet's Flirting with Disaster, but I don't know how many people would actually know it.

Thanks - American band is a good call.  I used to work with the singer in Jovi tribute so thing are likely to get family rocky.

He wants to do some steve earle so that will be on the list I suspect.

I'll check out the Willie Nelson tune.

  • Had a quick look and the Willie Nelson, Richards versions don't sound much as I remember them at all!  Oh well...

Wis given, I love Dan Baird's* solo catalogue although I don't know how recognisable any of it is.
I Love You Period was a 'radio hit' ie had lots of airplay at the time but nobody bought it. One of the great rock choruses of all time and upbeat, 3 chords (IIRC) so it will survive a few different approaches.

    ' I love you period
Do you love me question mark
    Please, please exclamation point
I want to hold you in parentheses.'

    [ from memory]

*Singist from the Georgia Satellites and, very probably, the only country rock singer of note to record a live album in Dudley.

If you don't mind redneck country there's the Brooks & Dunn catalogue. Plenty of hits in there.

A number that always got a great response when I was in a country rock band was Tim McGraw's "I like it, I love it".

  • We [Acko Pulco & The Cliff Divers] play quite a bit of music with a country tinge (we're more TexMex).

Playing Wold Top Beer festival on October 14, if you fancy a listen.

Thanks chaps - a few more ideas I hadn’t thought that I’ll add to the list.
unfortunately the singer has gone very quiet so might not be as quick to happen.

Here’s my current list of suggestions
    Fortunate Son
I put a spell on you
    La grange
    Just got paid
    Mississippi Queen
    Train Train
    Good times
    American band
    Simple man
    Bad to the bone
    Remedy
    Hard to handle
    Ramblin man
    Jessica
    Oh well
    Copperhead road
    American woman
    Take it easy

I’d loke to add some modern country - Keith urban, Tom McGraw etc but it’s harder finding hits the average punter will know.
