Following the death this week of Tom I thought I'd explore the Travelling Wilburys a bit - apart from a few well known singles I'd never really paid much attention to them - Own no CD's (yet)

just spent 30 mins on the exercise bike just listening to them - wow - going to buy the albums etc - Love the simplicity - almost like a good buskers band - So many songs could be put into a good covers band straight away like Wilbury Twist (so catchy and simple)

Why did I not listen sooner ? - I'm a big Tom Petty fan after all

I got them all, including the "unofficials".

Just what you'd expect if you put a bunch of brilliant tune writers in a studio.

Cutting-edge music that "pushes boundaries"?  No, of course not.

Great, fun, smile-on-your-face listening?  Oh yes.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

I fell for the fact that they did two albums - Volume One and Volume Three. That was George's idea apparently! Ha.

  • Wasn't a Tom Petty album of the era produced by Lynne and seen as Vol 2?

  • Great songs and s wonderful vibe to the albums. There's a cracking off-the-cuff solo from Gary Moore on Vol 3. Can't remember the song but it jumped right out at me when I first heard it and I knew it had to be him.

Listened to Volume 1 on the way to work this morning, such a joyous record.

Volume 3 for the drive home.

I only have Vol 1. I forgot about vol 3. I will have to download it on Spotify for the way home.

I guess that would be Full Moon Fever?

Petty had started recording that, then did the Wilbury's Vol 1 album, then back to FMF...and all or the Wilbury's apart from Bob guest on FMF...so it's certainly has a strong Wilbury presence......but the Vol 1 - Vol 3 title names was a joke.

Listened to Vol 3 last night, I don't think I ever got round to listening before.  But wow, that's one of those albums that's love at first listen!

The Wilbury Twist is hilarious, you can imagine them cracking up in the studio recording that one

One that struck me was Cool Dry Place (IIRC).  But they are pretty much all good.

Lots of fun songs, but then you hear "Not Alone Any More" and it's absolutely classic Roy Orbison - what a voice!

And "End of the Line" is going to be my funeral song...

Jeff Lynne also produced 'Into The Great Wide Open' and 'Highway Companion'.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it
