I fancy making up a compilation album of tracks with great emotional solos, so I'm looking for nominations. Not so much blazing fast madness, more the slow, meaningful stuff. Also, decent length, not just a 10 second solo on some hit.

    Anything you recommend?

    For starters I'm going with:

Dire Straits - Brothers in arms
    Camel - For today
    good call. try also

Camel - Stationary Traveller, Long Goodbyes, Ice
Ritchie Blackmore - Wasted Sunsets, Vielleicht das Nächster Zeit
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

Dinosaur Jr - Get me. The final solo (of three) lasts for a minute and a half, possibly one of my favourite solos ever.

This is one of my all-time favourites, which brings me onto my new favourite song!

Great melody, fantastic harmonies, a fine bit of whistling, and two tasteful solos by Neil Finn. These fellas sure know how to write a good tune!

If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

  • Has anyone suggested Snowy White on Bird of Paradise from White Flames?

Andy Powell's sublime solo on Wishbone Ash's 'Throw Down The Sword' from their 'Live Dates' album. It really is a beautiful, melodic solo which is all about the feel. As a young player back in the 70s it was probably the first extended solo that I learnt to play proper-like :)

  • @equalsql good call. I am reminded of the solo on Living Proof (Live Dates vol II). On the studio album (Just Testing) this was an "obbligato" played behind the last verse, but live, they strung it out and played it as a solo after the last verse. I don't know whether it was played by Laurie Wisefield or Andy Powell, but whoever did it deserves huge street cred for making the guitar sing.

End solo from Fleetwood Mac’s I’m So Afraid, live version from The Dance Album. Buckingham at his best!

Frank Zappa's Watermelon in Easter Hay.

Several versions abound, and live he played this with either the SG, a Strat or even a Les Paul, though I reckon he nails it best on the studio album:

Here's a live Strat version, just so you can watch the master guitarist at work in close-up:

And as a bonus, I'll throw in Hubert Sumlin's "Come Home Baby"

There's also plenty by the Allman Brothers Band, especially "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". You could even plunder Duane Allman's Mussel Shoals recordings.
