It's time to renew the house insurance. Since I did this last year I've bought some new guitars and a couple of amps, and these are kept in the house. Are these items covered by general house contents policies or do I need to look for a policy that asks for each item to be declared?

  • Generally yes subject to item limits. Or if they are used exclusively for trade, which I doubt they are

  • There will also be item limits when you take them out the house, but many will cover this if you inform them

    You'll usually find they are completely covered at home, it's when you're out of the house with expensive equipment that there may be a relevant limit on cover. Check the following wordings on your schedule and in the policy booklet:

    Individual item limit
    All risks / Personal Possessions cover, definition and limit
    Accidental damage
    Cover for items left in vehicles unattended

    Hope that helps

    Just need cover for home. Some policies are stating a £1000 limit per item. That's too low.

  • The other thing to think about is whether you want to put high risk items on your main home policy, given that there is a bigger chance of a claim. Your household insurance bonus would be impacted and your premiums go up. Having a separate policy does two things;

    You get a specialist insurer who knows exactly what you as a musician need

    You insulate your remaining contents from potential negative effects from claims on high risk stuff.
