Is it time for ...

What's Hot
... we've not had a making & modding challenge for a while.

Should we?

What might it be?

Who'd be interested?

Or not?

I've never been involved in one but it could be fun!

How about tarting up a dog?

Buy a cheap and possibly nasty minger of a guitar on gumtree or whatever, and turn it into a lean, mean, twanging machine.

  • How about buying a cheap acoustic and turning it into an Elven fantasy guitar? ;)

I'm in, but notoriously bad at actually finishing these things.

lets keep it fun and flexible.... not too many restrictions on budget or rules to make it fair.  We only need strict rules if it's going to be a proper competition

    I'm actually up for that.

We we could have a "decorate a guitar with a theme*" challenge.  Anyone with a sharpie could join in. Its more a finishing challenge than a building one but doesn't rule out full builds

That could be amazing. Maybe not just elven, but open to steampunk, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi etc

It's also something I could conceivably do from my ridiculous location. There's always a bunch of cheap acoustics for sale here.

A restriction challenge could be fun.. make a "usable" instrument only using an axe to carve, cut chop etc

Or no powertools, hammers only, blindfold build challenge, wear a hat..

    so many possibilities.. or impossibilities..

    How about something pedal based?

Aye, it can be as open as desired. Could be electric or acoustic, 6-string or bsss, etc, and the work needed can be as little or as much as you like.

Maybe we make it completely open, and it just becomes "do anything you like", but with a deadline?

Perhaps it's "I didn't get it for Christmas, so I'm making it myself" as a theme, and we run it from 1/1 to 31/3 next year?

i like that.. probably a better call than only use a hammer to make a guitar...

"What I really wanted for Christmas." The challenge is to achieve something which you've not done before. It's like making a New Year's resolution, and then delivering to it. Q1 2018 is a good idea because there's too much goes on between now and Christmas.

I like the idea of a Challenge build....especially taking something cheap and modding it

What about a "buy a kit for under £100 and see what you can do with it"

Extra bonus points for weird and wacky.

Perhaps a Forum kit deal where we all buy the same kit mod it?

  • Harley Benton ST style kit is £60 on Thomann. That's £40 to play with.

Further to my comment earlier suggesting pedals, the reason is I'd quite like to have a go at some form of challenge, but if I was going to build a kit, it probably wouldn't be a cheap HB kit (in order to scratch a Tele itch, I have been eyeing up a kit built Tele kit, but my time is a bit too limited just now..).
My thinking is something like a pedal, is cheaper, less likely to end up as a novelty item, and won't take up as much room as a guitar sized paperweight.

Set a budget (possibly allow more for anybody wanting to use a kit?), and see what bizarre things people can come up with.
I'm personally wondering if a combined fuzz/tremolo could be made on strip board, or add an Arduino for programmable tremolo control...
