Fractal FX - modelling a Maestro MPF-1 & Stone Deaf PDF-2 pedal

How would one go about reproducing a Parametric Distortion Filter effect similar to a Maestro MPF-1 or Stone Deaf PDF-2 using the Fractal FX platform?

I quite like the QOTSA vibe, but I'm a newcomer to the modelling game.

Any suggestions?

  • Having looked at the PDF 2 demo online, how about using a filter block with a drive block?

  • Yeah I think you could do this either within the pedal using the filters and sweepable midrange, or you could do it with a parametric EQ or filter block after whichever distortion source you wanted.

There's probably an amount of post amp filtering going on too, especially on the choruses where there's very little high end in the guitars

  • A while back someone posted an excellent video about getting a good QOTSA sound. I'm fairly sure a large part of it was just a graphic EQ with a massive boost at a single mid frequency.

Maybe someone remembers what I'm talking about?

On the PDF-1, the main functions are the Height (cut/boost), Frequency (Hz/kHz) and Bandwidth (Q), with a clean/dirty switch.

  • Here's the video.

Not necessarily a pedal but a mix of amp and a shedload of EQ, particularly midrange boost

Thanks, I just need to Fractalize it now.

It seems like a very useful sound to explore and take in new directions, if only I can work out which types of blocks go where
