DIY pedals: stereo in and mono out

What's Hot
I've noticed a lot of the DIY pedal kits have stereo jacks in, with mono out. Wondering the reason for this when it's not a stereo effect per se. Only the hot and the ground are connected to the circuit.

Can the stereo in be substituted for a mono in?

Probably so inserting a jack connects the battery to ground and thus the pedal is "on"

A mono jack socket would permanently be powering the circuit whever a jack was inserted or not

On my home made pedals I used stereo for power on the output rather than the input.  Just copied what my Boss looper used to do (I sold it).  Same thing though.
