I think Taylor makes nicer entry-level instruments than Martin, but once you go up the range it's just a tonal preference mostly. There are so many options out there I'd shoot out against lesser-known ones in your budget - Taylor or Martin may still win the day (acoustics are very organic things - make sure you even shoot out multiple examples of the same model once you've narrowed it down) - but you're spoiled for choice for sure, so don't go in married to the logo on the headstock.

martin, out of those 2 choices.

re Gibson, when I was in the market for a nice acoustic (this was '06), I really, really wanted a gibson. But all of them were utter dogs, one of them even had a broken strut, when I pointed it out to the member of staff, he put it back in the wall. £1200 they were asking for it.

I prefer Martin to Taylor, which is why I play a Furch.

I have a Taylor 214CE. It was a nicer guitar than the equivalent Martin's I tried when I bought it.

    Dumb question.

    Daddy or Chips?
    Red ones are better.

  • I’ve owned many of both over the years.I did notice that newer revoiced ones did sound more stronger in bass and mids. However now it’s just martins. No matter what the headstock says just play as many as possible and take your time(hard when you have gas)but you will know when you’ve found the “one”.
    Good luck.

Martin Clunes is much funnier than Taylor Swift, but I'd much rather have Taylor Swift in my bed than old rubber lips Clunes

And before anyone jumps in and says this is a facile comment - I was making a serious point..

Generalising on brands is not advisable - it's all about picking the right tool for the right job..

    I make that Martin 10 - Taylor 2 (including The Pirates as one vote only). So in my mind that is offical;

Martin is definately better than Taylor.

However, almost every other brand mentioned is better than both.

I believe this is exactly how the Daily Mail science column works!

    Which of these is better:
    i) Apple ios vs Android
    ii) BMW vs Audi
    iii) Gibson vs Fender
    iv) Helix vs Kemper
    v) Martin vs Taylor

If you answered mostly the first brand in each pair above then a Martin is the guitar for you.

    Science innit?

    This is unfortunately true.

But don't write off Gibson, if you can play the actual guitar you (may!) want to buy - when they get it right, they get it so right that nothing else touches them. My Dove is simply the best-sounding, best-playing acoustic guitar I have ever experienced - literally 'the sound in my head' of what a great acoustic should be, and - despite its long scale length - feels like it's strung a gauge lighter than it really is. And despite being very much *not* what I thought I wanted in an acoustic guitar, or even what conventional wisdom says should be good - it's all-maple but sounds warm and full (not hollow or bright), has a huge thick bridge (but sounds vibrant and powerful), is a dreadnought (but fingerpicks as well as it strums), and looks like Dolly Parton's handbag (I don't really like flashy guitars) - then that's OK as well.
