For those who don't currently have access to well-stocked workshops I wonder if this project could be of use. Has anybody tried it? I may give the Hastings branch a look at some point.

This is the blurb -

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.

A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.

It seems like it could lend itself to making and modding pretty well.

Yep - there's one of those near me which I never pursued but should have done.

    Sounds good.

    You can't have that.

Men in sheds?  Next thing, someone will come up with women in kitchens as a concept and then it'll be all over the Daily Mail, politicians will have to resign and there'll be a twitter tag.

But - apart from the PC BS - what a great idea.  And ideal for someone who needs some space and tools for their hobby.

Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • I've just researched the ones near me, they're ran by age UK and are specifically for older men to chat, and they have planned activities, bit of a shame (for me)

I'll probably drop them an email as they said they need someone with IT skills, so I still might be able to help out.

  • All the ones near me appear to be daytime only during the week. No use for people that work.

  • Yeah, I got the impression that there was a social/therapeutic angle at play. Pretty good idea, but not for everyone. I'm still wavering.

The whole point of building my own "shed" was that I could go in and lock the doors.

If I wanted to "socialise" I'd , erm, well, no idea really, the concept is alien.
