Was wondering if there are any brands of mandolin strings that are lower tension, along the lines of silk and steel or newtone heritage?

Because of the short scale of a mandolin the strings have to be high tension. I'm no expert but I've played for a few years and I've never come across any alternatives. Sorry... You've just got to torture those fingertips until their used to it!

  • What kind of mandolin have you got? You could try a bowl back or classical style one with a shorter scale which might give you some relief.

it's a flat top, so i guess that's more classical style. It's mostly chord playing a struggle with, on the bass strings. Melody playing is fine (though still can't quite get 2 tone bends out of the thing).

  • Has it been set up? I've had 2 an A shape and an F shape, both the same scale. Once I'd adjusted the bridge the A shape was okay, but the F shape was still impossible to play, probably a result of a poorly cut nut.
