Can anyone recommend a polish that is safe to use to polish/clean nitro finished guitars?

  • I bought a little bottle of Fender Custom Shop polish, figuring that all the Fender Custom Shop guitars are finished in nitro, so it would be a good bet. Does the job. Get a nice microfibre cloth while you're at it (although an old t-shirt would probably be just as good).

  • Gibson's "Pump Polish" - designed for nitro finishes.

And, from memory, smells lemony! :)

I just use an old t shirt to buff up my guitars.
Polishing paint always sounds odd to me.

I thought that might be a safe bet along with the Fender one.

    This stuff is the best:

I had a '67 335 with a really hazy finish and no matter what I used it either didn't touch or it actually got worse!

Tried the Virtuoso stuff and it came up an absolute treat. I won't use anything else now. There's a cleaner and a polish. To be honest, I use the cleaner more than anything.

@Ossyrocks very interesting.  Do you know if it's suitable for satin finishes, e.g. Martin 15 series?

I think you would need to be careful on a satin finish.

I think there's a video demo out there, in which this stuff is used to bring a more gloss finish to a satin finished acoustic.

OK cheers.  I see they're in Salford, so I might go and have a look.

  • Are there any polishes that are particularly good for glossing up a satin nitro finish?

Currently thinking about Virtuoso, given the above comments. Not expecting to be able to suddenly transform it into a high gloss, just a bit glossier.

The Virtuoso cleaner will get you there, but it may take a bit of elbow grease too.

I generally use Planet Wave Restore in store - you can use the Shine but that is more for just light cleaning of fresh fingermarks - Restore will help clean up old 'grime' - also use Maguires Car Polish especially on stubborn wear/grime
