  • this is fun vintage pop-rock in the meaty, beaty big and bouncy style.

    Sweet Home Chicago- Blues Brothers
What key are you doing Sweet Home Chicago in?
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

The take that version, which I think we will all agree is the definitive version.

    G. Because I dabble in harmonica & it works well playing second position on my C harp.

Tonight's homework was "Gold on the Ceiling" by Black Keys. Only 3 chords (C,F & G). Huge fun once you get the groovy going.

  • Particular crowd pleasers from my cover band experiences were:

    Roll with it (Oasis)
    Dakota (Stereophonics)
    Kiss (Prince)
    Town called Malice ( Jam)
Come up and see me (Steve Harley)

There is a sweet spot of finding the song everybody likes but not that many play well.

I think Stairway to Heaven had been very useful to learn lots of different styles. and sounds impressive to others.
They don't appreciate the hard bits sometimes. I play the solo and I get 'how do I know that's correct?' but for the beginning bit they love it.

On a side note it makes me wonder if I should learn Zep songs with correct musical timing or Jimmy Page timing.
My attempts at solos are less than note perfect, I aim to hit the "big/key" notes at the right times, but I'm improving with practice. Playing the song at less than full speed helps a lot.
We could do a tight as hell 5 hour set but none of the songs would be note for note. In fact unless it’s a tribute act, I’m not a fan of that

    Woah! No way!

I just assumed then that Take That were like Boyzone...
In fact... This sort of makes me question my whole childhood now.

    I am so confused.
So wait, since when did Take That play live instruments?!
    Wow.

  • So, what other staples would you expect most guitarists to be able to do?
Uh-Oh...I seem to have managed to play the guitar for 39 years without having learned anyone elses songs. :(

Then again, my playing does sound like I'm falling downstairs at the time...

If you want to animate an audience there are two dead certs which any decent covers band should know, Brown Sugar and Spirit in the Sky.  You can get a good ten minutes out of "Spirit".

My mate Clive’s got 30+ years out of it so far and is as busy as ever
